As expected - now my campaign for clean air in #Somerset schools blows up (ha), I am coming under fire in all directions. Important, I think, to clarify a few things. A 🧵… gofund.me/3691a0c0

1️⃣ It’s not “my idea” and I didn’t just make it up. I’m quite literally standing on the shoulders of giants. Namely doctors and scientists in the 🇺🇸 like @JimRosenthal4 and @CorsIAQ; as well as @rhysthomas, @PeteUK7 and others in the 🇬🇧
2/
2️⃣ HEPA filters in schools is NOT County Council policy. I am a County Councillor in #Somerset, but at this stage I’m simply raising awareness as we head into a winter with barely any Covid mitigations in schools. (I am of course working to make it policy)
3/
3️⃣ I am not forcing (and neither do I have the power to force!) schools to get air filters. I am (1) raising awareness and (2) helping schools in my electoral division (#Coker) get air filters ***if they want them*** ⚠️
4/
4️⃣ “You’re causing panic and trying to close schools”(!) I want schools to STAY OPEN, as safely as possible, by deploying affordable and effective air filters. I quite literally am campaigning to keep schools open and keep children in school (sorry kids)
5/
5️⃣ “There’s no evidence they work”… There is plenty of evidence that @3M MERV 13 HEPA filters trap virus particles. They work. It’s a fact. Researchers from @ucdavis have conducted analysis of efficacy bit.ly/3wPGkpI.
6️⃣ “You’re wasting Council money”. First, see 2️⃣. I haven’t spent a penny of Council money. Second, it costs a school £200 PER DAY to pay for one supply teacher. It costs between £170-190 for one DIY air filter. The cost SAVING is apparent to me.
7/
In summary: it’s not “my” idea (I’m following the lead of scientists & engineers), it’s not Somerset County Council policy (yet), I’m only helping schools that want them get them, I’m trying to keep schools open & safe, there is evidence they work, I’m eyeing up cost savings

Over the last few days I have faced some criticism for my Air Filters for #Somerset Schools campaign👇🏻 Please donate! 🙏🏻
One such criticism is that I should be raising money for more school resources as that’s a bigger priority (a🧵) 1/ gofund.me/3691a0c0
My response to this? Imagine a school didn’t have any fire extinguishers or fire alarms. It had them last year (and the year before), but it got rid of them this year because all the adults are fire-safety trained now anyway
2/
Now imagine there’s a fire. It’s only small, but it’s coming our way. Someone notices, and says we should probably get some fire blankets and extinguishers back in the classroom as a precaution
“No”, someone cries, “you shouldn’t do that until teachers are better paid.”

🚨🚨🚨So, here it is folks. Please help me raise £13,500 to build HEPA air filters for every junior school and nursery setting in #CokerDivision that wants them👇🏻
📢 Do you want to make a real difference this winter? The next few months are going to be difficult for many in #Coker
So, to help residents get the help they might need, Cllrs @MikeHewitson1, @NicolaClarkLD & I have published a leaflet full of useful information 🧵 1/
From @cab_south to @Somerset_CF - we've pulled together the direct contact details of a range of local agencies, charities, and councils
2/
In July, @SomersetLibDems declared a #costofliving emergency. We did this in recognition of the financial pressures facing households right across the county
Now we want to make sure every house in #Coker gets one of these leaflets. Will you help us make it happen? 3/
Today, I took delivery of @PeteUK7’s DIY air filter parts. I made a cup of tea and in 2 hours I’d constructed a highly effective air purifier at a cost of ~£160. An off the shelf comparator costs £400+

There is plenty of data out there re: the effectiveness of the #CorsiRosenthalBox. See: @CleanAirClassrm & others. Here it is at no.1 (the lowest fan speed). It’s very quiet.
I’ve done some calculations on what it would cost to get 1 of these into every school in #Somerset 2/
There are 269 state-funded schools in #Somerset. At £160ea it would cost £43,040 to get just 1 unit into every school. An additional £82,240 if you wanted to include all EYFS settings (514 of them). BUT…
