“For disabled women, the road to discovering our sexuality is lonely. We’ve all been repeatedly gaslighted by a society that refuses to acknowledge and listen to disabled voices.
(2/11)
I’d notice people’s gaze change when they laid their eyes on me at airports, grocery stores, and malls. So I learned a trick to deal with it. I would take off my spectacles whenever I was in a public place so I wouldn’t notice them staring at me.
(3/11)
Disabled people are often taught that only a certain kind of ability is capable of being attractive, falling in love, getting married, or settling down.
(4/11)
I, too, was fixated on the idea of my date accepting me for who I was, even if they were grossly incompatible, controlling, patronising, and chauvinistic.
(5/11)
One time, I even stayed in an abusive relationship for a year and a half simply because I never believed anyone would accept me as I was.
I have also realised that non-disabled people are terrified of disability.
(6/11)
I dated someone whose mother told him I wouldn’t be a suitable partner and that he shouldn’t get into all this. She then compared me with another family member in a wheelchair, even though she had never met me and didn’t know what my disability was.
(7/11)
When you’re in a relationship with someone disabled, don’t assume, and make room for your partner’s disability in the connection. Help them only when they need it. You aren’t doing your disabled partner a favour by helping them. This is a relationship.
(8/11)
I had a speech disability and was the only visibly physically disabled child in my class. I’ve never felt like I truly belonged to any of my educational institutions.
(9/11)
And so, for everyone who feels different and lost, I launched Revival Disability as a space where one can live in whichever way they desire.
(10/11)
I believe there is power in disabled dissent, and by forming a community, I created a space that honoured their disabled creativity and spoke their language.
(11/11)
I decided that if society doesn’t allow us at their table, we’ll bring our accessible chairs with armrests and plenty of cushions.”

In October 1952, freedom fighter Potti Sriramulu went on a fast, demanding the immediate constitution of an Andhra State. Undeterred by the non-attention of national leaders, he fasted & fasted, finally passing away on the night of 15/16 December after 58 days without food. Image

His martyrdom provoked widespread public anger, with hartals and dharnas held across the Telugu community.

Unnerved by the scale of the protests, and the intensity of the anger, PM Nehru and CM Rajaji capitulated.

An Andhra State was formed in 1953, provoking Kannada, Marathi, and Malayalam speakers to demand separate states of their own.

A States Reorganisation Commission was formed, which recommended the constitution of linguistic states.

Loved the spectacular costumes of #PonniyinSelvan1? Costume designer Eka Lakhani is the brain behind it.
@ekalakhani

“Everyone has their own imagination of the characters,” says Eka, adding that the design team made sketches of each character. Image

As a reference, they used the old drawings by artist Maniam for the weekly magazine Kalki.

Eka points out that while these drawings portray the royal characters during their public appearances, they had to imagine how #Kundavai, #Nandini or #Vanathy would look in their private chambers.
