I am deeply troubled by the recent explicit threats of violence at the Downers Grove Library. This is the direct result of public officials, and aspiring ones spreading hatred in our communities. shawlocal.com/my-suburban-li…
Having a public voice comes with great responsibility. You can encourage voices of kindness and love or you can encourage voices of hatred and fear. My opponent, and the groups who support him are in the latter category. dailyherald.com/news/20220803/…
They are homophobes and fear-mongers who would incite violence and hatred if it helped scare good people into silence. It is the playbook of fascism.
His incitement of fear at the Downers Grove Library has been directly responsible for increased police burdens in our community and now today's threat. keithpekau.com/denounces-libr…
He is undoubtedly too broken, too flawed and too fragile to apologize, or to rescind the support of the hate groups who support him. Do not let his deficiencies bully you into silence. Love has the numbers.
I will not cease in my respect for all of the people in #IL06, nor will I desist in standing up to bullies. Don't elect anyone too hateful, or.too cowardly to do the same. /fin chicagotribune.com/politics/ct-aw…
A few quick thoughts on the normalization of hatred and racism in the @GOP in light of TFG's anti-Asian screed tonight:
1/ In January of 2019, the House voted 424-1 to disapprove of Steve King after his racist comments. Even Steve King voted in favor (the only no was my friend @RepBobbyRush who felt it was insufficient penalty for his sin.) rollcall.com/2019/01/15/dis…
2/ When we were leaving the floor after that vote, I got in the elevator, packed full of members and said "well, I'm glad we still live in a country where you can piss off a racist by calling him a racist."
Several questions that should be asked of every @GOP candidate for the House of Representatives who claims to be "tough on crime". Brief thread:
1. 2 years ago, states and municipalities were bleeding red-ink. Among other things, they were concerned about being able to fund their police departments. We passed that bill, and funded those depts without a single @GOP vote. Would you have voted yea? clerk.house.gov/Votes/202172
2. After January 6, we sought to recognize the Capitol Police with a Congressional Medal of Honor. The @GOP blocked our initial effort, and then 21 voted against. All dems voted in favor. How would you have voted? washingtonpost.com/politics/21-ho…
This is true, but raises a bigger issue: we need to score all our legislation for it's impact on GHG emissions. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
We regularly calculate the cost impact of our legislation but rely on outside groups (and too often, politically-convenient double- or mis-counting) when talking about the GHG impacts.
Thankfully, there is a fix. My friend @RepJoeNeguse has introduced the Carbon Cost Act, which I'm proud to co-sponsor to do exactly that. congress.gov/bill/117th-con…
Let's talk for a moment about the Republicans running for Congress who claim to be tough on crime. They are EITHER campaigning on a promise to vote stand up to @GOP leadership or are lying cowards. Let's review:
1/ In the wake of the COVID downturn, every town was bleeding cash. Tax revenues were down. We had to get money to states and municipalities to - among other things - fund their police departments. We provided that support without a single @GOP vote. clerk.house.gov/Votes/202172
2/ After January 6, we sought to honor the Capitol Police officers who defended us. The @GOP blocked our ability to pass that bill with unanimous consent, and then 21 voted against. All Dems voted in favor. washingtonpost.com/politics/21-ho…
Today will be a day, as it should, to remember the heroism and sacrifice of all who we lost on 9/11. As we commit to never forget, let's also remember that terrorism has no home in any religious tradition... and that opposing terrorism is a collective responsibility.
To the 1st point - remember George W Bush: "The face of terrorism not the true faith of Islam... Islam is peace... When we think of Islam, we think of a faith that brings comfort to a billion people around the world... and that’s made brothers and sisters out of every race"
And to the 2nd, remember the 33 passengers and 7 crew members, who barely knew each other but mobilized as one to thwart a terrorist attack on the US Capitol. They sacrificed everything so that we wouldn't have to.
This is an excellent thread from @BrianDeeseNEC. I don't think folks recognize how unprecedented and effective our economic programs were over the last 2.5 years. But this goes a long way towards fixing.
Remember March of 2020 - less than 3 years ago. In one month, we saw record surges in unemployment and record collapses in GDP. The only precedent we had was the Great Depression.
Ben Bernanke came in to address our caucus to share his wisdom from 2008. It was obvious to all of us that the $800B 2008 package wouldn't be enough. It was also obvious that the 2008 recovery - quick for banks, dreadfully slow for the unbanked - wouldn't work.
