"I do accept that we should have laid the ground better." Truss
She thinks it's a comms problem. Sigh.
Saying "I want to reassure people" repeatedly is profoundly unreassuring. #Truss
God she'd be out of her depth in a paddling pool.
She's so robotic I always think she's going to start saying "These violent delights have violent ends" and start sputtering. #Westworld
Truss not denying they will cut benefits. Not denying cuts to public spending. She does commit to the triple lock (of course, pensioners are their only supporters left).
She says she is absolutely committed to cutting the 45p rate. No hesitation. Tory MPs weeping into their corrnflakes.
She genuinely seems to think low growth is a function of caring about redistribution. It's an entirely evidence free world view.
I do not understand how you could be a politician who meets lots of different people from across society and think the mistake we've made is to focus too much on helping the lowest income. Has she never been to a foodbank?
"There's no point publishing something that isn't ready" - Truss talking about OBR but perhaps projecting somewhat.
Even if she was good at the presentational stuff this would be an indefensible package. She is not good at the presentational stuff.
Gove: "indaquate understanding at the top of Government of the scale of change required."
Profoundly concerned about unfunded tax cuts.
Gove says cutting the 45p rate is wrong "to have as your principle decision cutting tax on the wealthiest shows the wrong values."
Won't say if he'll vote for it.
Jake Berry on Sky saying they'll take the whip away from anyone voting against 45p. But if 60-70 say they will including Gove and other senior MPs.....
The don't have authority to throw around threats like that In don't think. See e.g. from a former chief whip...
Having worked with Gove and Truss at the same time I'm reasonably confident that Gove will comfortably win any battle between them even if Truss has the might of the executive on her side.
He's a much better politician; he has impeccable Leave credentials so they can't play that card against him; he is popular with the the lobby and knows how to give a newsworthy quote; and most importantly is he obviously right.
Add Steve Brine and Andrew Bowie to the list below and we're already on 13 public rebels on 45p tax. That's over a third of the majority gone already.
Opinium remove don't knows and reweight - which means they usually show smaller Lab leads. Highest ever under that methodology has been 8pts but usually 2-4pts.
This is all people switching to Labour.
I'm sure they'll all switch back when the public sector cuts are announced and Jacob is on TV telling them employment protections are being removed.
"Questioning or contradicting the orthodoxy of a field or institution can be very necessary, and unlock new insights. But self-identifying as a contrarian is unwise, since maintaining and validating your self-image starts to take precedence over seeking truth."
People who offer occassional and interesting contrarian takes are very useful. People who think of themselves as contrarians can be safely ignored.
@PaulGoodmanCH I am very curious as to what would happen if a large number of MPs were to make it clear they would vote against the 45p measure if no u-turn but No 10 then turned the vote into a no confidence one.
