Pakistan's reliance on their openers is a self-perpetuating issue. Openers bat deep ➡️ don't afford middle order crease time➡️middle order struggles because big impacts with few opportunities is hard ➡️ top order assume even more responsibility to protect middle order 🔁 #PAKvENG
The strike rate of Pakistan's numbers 3-11 by year since 2020 (when Rizwan started opening) is telling: 141 in 2022, 130 in 2021 and now 123 in 2022. In 2016-2020 Pakistan's numbers 3-11 faced 72 balls per match; since Rizwan moved to open they face 55. #PAKvENG
Babar & Rizwan are not a bad thing for Pakistan's team; far from it - both contribute positive impacts (Rizwan +7, Babar +2 per match) & they work brilliantly with a strong bowling attack. It's just worth saying their excellence makes improving the middle order hard. #PAKvENG

The World Test Championship Final between India v New Zealand starting on Friday is arguably the single most important Test match ever played. On a very basic level a Test has never had a world title riding on it but the match carries broader significance as well. #INDvNZ
The WTC is imperfect but it has all been building to this moment, this match. If it’s a good & memorable one it should help lend significance & context to the next WTC cycle which could help reinvigorate the format, the opposite might be true if it’s a dud. #INDvNZ
In a way this shows how the way we watch sport is weird—no single match should carry so much broader significance—but context is so important & this is essentially the first attempt at a World Cup of Test cricket—150 years after the first Test match. That’s also weird. #INDvNZ

Cool little package from Nass on Kane Williamson’s superpower: playing the ball late. Every time I watch Kane bat I am reminded of AB de Villiers’ box theory. 🎥 . #ENGvNZ Image
There’s playing the ball late and then there’s playing the ball when Steve Smith plays it - which is—frankly—absurd. If it looks like Smith has a fraction of a second longer to make his decisions that’s because he does. Freak. #ENGvNZ
For what it's worth, Kohli's average interception point v pace in this timeframe is 2.18m - one of the earliest in the world. As is often the case it is extreme approaches that breed success. Playing late allows time to adjust; playing early can nullify movement. #ENGvNZ

The fact that the Ahmedabad Test was the shortest Test since WWII will inevitably provoke questions about the pitch & whether it was fit for purpose & its overall quality. This is understandable but there are a few important points to underline surrounding this debate. #INDvENG
As per the ICC's own guidelines on pitches. Was the Ahmedabad pitch unfit? No. Was it poor? Probably not. It took big spin but it rarely seemed "excessive" & there was no evidence of uneven bounce. #INDvENG
What was particularly interesting about this Test & pitch was that more than half the 28 spin wickets fell to balls that went straight on. The global average for 'small spin' wickets in Tests is one in four. This suggests no-spin balls played an unusually important role. #INDvENG

Exactly 12 years ago today, at 8pm in Bangalore, Brendon McCullum walked out to open the batting in the first match of the inaugural 2008 IPL season. He was about to play one of the most significant innings in cricket history & one that would change the sport forever. #IPL
McCullum's 158* off 73 balls smashed the world record for the highest score in a T20 by 17 runs & remained a record for five years. McCullum's 13 sixes was also a world record. In perhaps the single most important match in T20's history, McCullum played its greatest innings. #IPL
The opening match of the IPL was so significant because the tournament heralded the dawn of a new age for the sport: one which recalibrated the economics & structure of the sport from nation v nation contests to club v club & cemented India's hegemony over the global game. #IPL

The start of the South Africa series and the return of Roy, Buttler, Moeen & Stokes to the batting order after being rested in New Zealand is a significant day in England’s road to the World Cup. Thread (1/n). #SAvENG
The way England structure their team with these players back will be very interesting & is likely to indicate their plans for the tournament itself later this year. The two most important issues are the batting order & the balance of the team & they are related. #SAvENG
The primary issue around the batting order is that England - as is typical among T20 teams right now - have a surplus of top order options, so how they structure & utilise those players will be telling. #SAvENG
