1/ Live Tweeting @linseymarr's talk at #AAAR2020 on Science Communication during a Global Pandemic

As part of a panel with @ProfPeteD and yours truly Image
2/ Linsey recounts her experience during the pandemic.

Early on it was clear to her that SARS-COV-2 was airborne. Previous studies w/ the flu, the speed of spread, and pics of Chinese health care workers (w/ full airborne prot.) were clues

But @nytimes spreading misinformation Image
3/ Lots of work with lots of ppl. Lots of papers, hundreds of interviews....

Thanks her late postdoc advisor and Nobel Laureate Mario Molina, and Prof. @kprather88

Advice to focus of big picture to comm. w/ public Image
4/ First lesson: Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS)

- At a level that kids can understand.

- Only 3 interviews out of 500 where she got into deep details

- 3 points to get across in a interview. Make sure they come across to reporter

- Avoid jargon Image
5/ More lessons:

- Use analogies. Help ppl imagine something they can't see

- Focus on big picture and why it matters

- Speak in short sentences

- Stay in your lane. E.g. answer to policy question: "IF we choose to do this, these are the implications" Image
6/ - Review yourself. Been Make sure colleagues would agree with what you say, it can be backed up by evidence.

- Communicate the 80%, not get lost into details Image
7/ Concluding Remarks

- Make ppl care
- More info not always better
- Don't be afry to say I don't know
- Relate to things ppl know
- Communicate your love of science Image

1/ The State of Ventilation in the US as illustrated by a trip to the #AAAR2022 conference.

Just boarded @RideRTD bus to @DENAirport. 1/3 full, so far I am the only one with a mask (N95 Aura).

CO2 already quite high 5 min. after boarding even tho NOT full: poor ventilation...
2/ Still on @RideRTD bus to @DENAirport.

CO2 steadily climbing. Now over 2600 ppm, meaning >5% of the air we are breathing is "second hand", it has been in someone else's lungs before.

POOR ventilation. ~10 ppl masked our of 45, mostly KN95, few N95, 1 surgical.

#CovidCO2
3/ Made it to @DENAirport. Eating something outdoors so that I can remove the mask as little as possible in the terminal and the plane.

The CO2 sensor is measuring typical outdoor levels.

1/ From @TheLancet (most prestigious medical journal) Commission

"Multiple failures include costly delays in acknowledging the crucial airborne exposure pathway of SARS-CoV-2 & in implementing appropriate measures at to slow the spread of the virus"

thelancet.com/journals/lance…
2/ "@WHO acted too cautiously and too slowly on several important matters: "... to endorse the public use of face masks as protective gear, and to recognise the airborne transmission of the virus"

thelancet.com/journals/lance…
3/ In the uncertainty during COVID-19 outbreak, @WHO—repeatedly erred on the side of reserve rather than boldness. Initially, there were basic uncertainties [...] although over time the scientific community confirmed that considerable asymptomatic airborne transmission occurs"

1/ What are the REASONS for early DENIAL & continuing RESISTANCE & obfuscation by @WHO, @CDCGov & Other Public Health to the fact that #COVIDisAirborne?

We just published a paper on the contribution of history. Which is important, but NOT most important

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/in…
2/ Yesterday I wrote a 133 tweet thread explaining our recent paper and most of the history.

Some people think it is too long to read, and that it doesn't do justice to the main reason. So this (hopefully shorter) thread tries to address that.

3/ IMHO, the reasons for the denial, resistance and obfuscation of #COVIDisAirborne by @WHO @CDCgov etc. are:

(a) Politics and economics. Droplets and surfaces are VERY convenient to those in power. All the responsibility is on the individual.

1/ What were the historical reasons for the resistance to recognizing airborne transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Our peer-reviewed open-access paper is now published:

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/in… Image
2/ Soon after COVID-19 pandemic started, it was clear to many scientists (inc. those who understand aerosols) that AIRBORNE trans. was an important contributor

E.g. as soon as we talked to the Skagit choir, it was obvious that was airborne-dominated:

doi.org/10.1111/ina.12…
3/ However, major public health organizations such as @WHO and @CDCgov were in complete denial, saying that airborne transmission was MISINFORMATION!

(Disgracefully, @WHO has not deleted this tweet or clearly stated that it was an ENORMOUS error)
