I was shocked to find that the former children's commissioner had submitted an application for core participant status to the @covidinquiryuk with UsForThem. Turns out the current children's commissioner has also been supporting a bill put forward by them
h/t @karamballes Image
This bill is about keeping schools open - irrespective of risk - AND with absolutely no advocacy for mitigations that would actually make schools safer. This has been the thrust of the UsForThem argument- keep children at school- but oppose any action that would make them safe.
It's frankly shameful to see the former childrens commissioner and the current one collaborating with an organisation that has done so much harm- by putting out anti-mask & anti-vax misinformation & opposing mitigations with legal threats to govt.
If you want to understand the UsForThem and HART (both closely interlinked), you can read this thread derived from the #HARTleaks which are chats within these grps that were made public. This is the grp public officials have been working with.

Report shows increase in long COVID:
-2.3 million with long COVID for 28 days or more (1 in 28 people)
-*1.1 million* of these have had symptoms for >1 year
->500K have had symptoms for >2 years
-Increases across all age groups
- For 1.6 million it affects day to day activity
832,000 of the 2 million are from the omicron era- Despite high levels of vaccination & high levels of exposure, increases are still being seen. It's clear that mass infection of the population & repeated waves are having an impact on public health.
Women, working age groups, those living in deprived areas, working in social care, and with a disability or activity-limiting condition are at highest risk. Image

Astonishing isn't it that the age group that many scientists said early on was less likely to get infected has had more infections on average than any other age group. I wonder how those who put out this narrative- not just in the UK, but globally- square this with reality.
Either children are less susceptible (i don't think this is the case, but even so), but are far more exposed in the environments they are in - in which case school environments do contribute significantly to transmission. Or they are as susceptible and more exposed.
How does one explain this otherwise? This is ONS data- so not dependent on testing- a key advantage over the myriad of studies used to suggest children are less likely to get infected- when in fact they're less likely to be detected because of mild/asymptomatic infection.

Beautifully put. Here's a thread inspired by this tweet about the myth of justice that is upheld in our society to make it appear fair when it only works for the privileged. This is an important belief system that holds us back & perpetuates injustice 🧵
Many of us live in a world where we think injustice happens, but it's rare - the work of bad apples, or bad luck. For the most part the rule of law holds up, and systems of accountability work. We think that we live in a society that's mostly fair. It's a 'civilised world'
The truth for some of us is vastly different. The fact that injustice is rare and our societies are mostly fair is a myth- a myth created to serve those who benefit from this. And one that many will believe for life, or until they encounter systemic injustice.

A must read piece by @n_hold
"they are people with “no motives at all” other than professional advancement. Institutions select for officials who're capable of the appearance of sincerity in doing what they’re told & of rationalizing uncomfortable orders"
blog.petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2022/09/19/pan…
This is the crux:
"The point of such officials is to help institutions navigate the larger pressures generated by what the philosopher Tony Smith calls the valorization imperative -the requirement in society that all social activity be made compatible with generation of profit."
Ultimately, no institution is fully immune or independent of this pressure- be it public health institutions, scientific institutions or even medical ones. And governments are fully complicit. One cannot expect science to guide policy in a system that is a slave to capitalism.

1) That's not what he said. He said those who *despise immigrants* shouldn't be in charge
2) While I don't agree this is a 'personal issue', we know there're black & brown people who're align with white supremacy oppressing those they perceive as 'inferior' in exchange for power
Would direct you to this explanation which is far more accurate, and doesn't misrepresent what @mrjamesob said - unlike your tweet
Indeed black and brown people can be racist, bigoted- and facilitate the oppression of their own. As you well know.

At some point we're going to need to begin a conversation about abelism, normalisation of death & disability among the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and marginalised in society- by journalists & media. I've seen hundreds of such cases. This isn't healthy @helaineolen Image
oh, and if you do want to educate yourself out of your deeply abelist beliefs, maybe read this:
Next time you're expressing sympathy with people 'too afraid to leave their homes', I hope you will be advocating for safer environments that would allow them to do this without taking huge risks (clean air, high-grade masks).
