Two things on #antisemitism that I haven’t seen mentioned around the #Kanye discussion that are important.

A 🧵on why antisemitism, at times, may be taken less seriously today by some in America, helping it spread further/faster, creating more fear for Jews & risk for all.

1/
1st: In the US (& the west broadly), Jews are mostly (inaccurately) perceived as a white religious group. This reduces our identity significantly in order to fit into western identity constructs & ultimately maps Jewish identity onto the contours of America’s racial divide.

2/
Jewish identity is far more complex than religion & includes many (socially constructed) racial identities. One can be an atheist & a Jew. We’ve identified as part of a people, or an ethnic group w/ a “national” identity, for 1000s of years longer than organized religion.

3/
While many Jews are white-presenting, & therefore can benefit from the privileges associated with whiteness, many Jews aren’t. Beyond erasing many Jews, the idea of Jews as white is a recent development & Judaism is nearly 6,000 years old.

4/
Crucially, white supremacists don’t believe Jews are white, but rather blame us for undermining the white race. Jews in Europe historically were not viewed/defined as white. The Germans went so far as to classify Jews as part of a different (semitic) race (hence antisemitic).

5/
But, since we’re perceived as white (privileged), antisemitism can get minimized relative to other bigotry (even if unintentionally) given the different, urgent, systemic challenges faced by other marginalized groups in America, especially people of color.

6/
2nd: In the US (& the west), our conception of systems of power/oppression reflect group status in society as relatively fixed (especially in the short run).

Centuries of structural white supremacy are a solid data point for that perception.

7/
However, Jews & antisemitism predate America (& the modern western world) by 1000s of years & antisemitism doesn’t follow the same pattern that has locked in centuries of racial power/oppression in America.

8/
As antisemitism spreads from the fringes to the mainstream (happening in America btw), the status/safety of Jews can/has changed fast. That’s true regardless of the skin color or economic status of some Jews in a society. It’s tempting to look at Jews in America & assume…

9/
…that we are safe/secure. But Jewish life in modern America is the exception to the rule of Jewish life for millennia. We’ve gone from safe to systemically & violently attacked/oppressed rapidly in era after era, society after society, continent after continent.

10/
All that’s needed is a toxic brew of societal turmoil, unchecked antisemitic lies, & a demagogue using scapegoats to secure power. Bc antisemitism is so old, Jews so few, & antisemitic ideas so familiar & accepted, antisemitism has been a frequent, effective, rapid weapon.

11/
Put the 1st & 2nd issues together & you have a recipe for people to constantly dismiss antisemitism as less serious/urgent, which enables the spread & normalization of antisemitism into the mainstream, & increases the risk to Jews (& others) as a consequence.

12/
A few other quick notes:
1.Obviously, these are just two factors of a complex problem in America with antisemitism.

2.Don’t cancel people. Challenge harmful ideas.

3.Mental illness, stress makes it easier to consume & spread bigotry.

13/
4. The deep irony of all this is that Kanye is literally pushing ideas embraced/pushed by white supremacists.

5. As @BulldogShadow has beautifully outlined, antisemitism is fuel for modern white supremacist movements in America.

14/
6. Since antisemitism is built on conspiracy theories, where the lies spread, truth is destroyed. Where truth is destroyed, democracy can’t survive. Without democracy, civil rights can’t sustain. Thus, all marginalized groups are threatened by the spread of antisemitism.

15/
7. Yes, white-presenting Jews can also act in ways that uphold/perpetuate white supremacy, even if unknowingly at times.

8. Our community has a ton of work to do to create a truly inclusive community & needs to continue working to challenge anti-Black racism…

16/
…& all other forms of bigotry, including inside our own community.

Correction to the 4th tweet: Judaism isn’t 6k years old. I was thinking about the Jewish calendar at 5783 & not when Judaism begins. Judaism dates back nearly 4K years. But what’s a few thousand years between friends, @stevesheffey?

For the pro-choice men out there ready to step up, a 🧵:

7 years ago I helped launch & now serve as Co-ED of @Men_4_Choice, the only org in America (to our knowledge) focused exclusively on activating, educating, mobilizing male allies in the fight for reproductive freedom.
I know many of you aren’t sure what to do & don’t want to make mistakes. I get it. I’ve screwed up & will again.

But, an imperfect ally is much better than a silent bystander.

Here’s guidance for how to approach this & action steps in no particular order.
1. Don’t try to be a savior. You’re a partner. A role player on the team. Not the captain. The most important role you can play is the role of getting other men like us engaged. We need to carry the burden of changing the way men think, speak, & act on this issue. That’s on us.

Many of my progressive friends have reached out privately about the @sunrisemvmt DC chapter statement. “Is that antisemitic,” they asked?

Here’s what I told them...

A THREAD
First, you need to understand what it means to be a Jew. Judaism is the shared religion of the Jewish people. Some of us are deeply religious. Some of us are totally secular. All of us are Jews. We’re a people, not simply a religious community.
Contrary to what most think, antisemitism is NOT anti-Judaism in its modern form (several hundred years). It’s anti-Jew. Not about how Jews pray. But rather about what Jews are accused of doing.

It’s now illegal to pass out food & water to voters waiting in line in Georgia.

Apparently feeding people made to wait hours to vote undermines our elections.

Who is coming to GA w/ me in 2022 to break this law???
Hopefully @marceelias gets this overturned in court. But damn they’re not even trying to hide their intention anymore.

Republican Senators must demand Trump's resignation tonight - THREAD:

The President of the United States stoked this with outright, verifiable lies. This is the logical conclusion of a months long, intentional effort to undermine faith in our elections.

1/
@GOP elected officials, most of whom know better, went along every step of the way. It's time for them to put country over party. Like at the end of Watergate, the majority of Republican Senators must now go to the White House and tell the President to resign.

2/
If he refuses, they should join a swift impeachment effort, to ensure he is forever disqualified from seeking this office in the future. Each of them swore an oath to defend the Constitution from threats foreign, and domestic.

A Thread on the @USJewishDems Ad Controversy:

Yesterday, JDCA released the ad below, drawing comparisons btw the rise of fascism (and Nazi's) in 1930's Europe to now. This led to calls from several prominent Jewish orgs to pull the ad down.

1/
There is a (smart) widely held belief (unwritten rule) that Nazi comparisons in our politics should largely be avoided. At the core, the concern is that we desensitize the public and minimize the full horror of what the Nazi's did. Some, went so far as to argue it insulted...

2/
...the memory of the 6M Jews murdered during the Holocaust. I have no interest in challenging/criticizing those who felt the ad crossed the line. But, Trump telling white supremacist terrorists to "stand by," spreading lies about mass voter fraud, and calling his people...

Thread on right-wing twisting of CDC #COVID19 data:

Over the weekend, right-wing skeptics have jumped on CDC data exploring deaths from the virus. Specifically, they’ve started arguing just 10k deaths have come from covid.

1/ Image
How the does this happen? Simple, people are using data on co-morbidities to twist the data. What is a co-morbidity? Think of it like an underlying health risk factor. So, a 50 year old man with a heart condition who dies from Covid has a co-morbidity around that condition.

2/
However, absent the pandemic, this man wouldn’t have died. He continues to live with the condition. Eventually, he may die from it. But, not now. In the exact same report being used to twist this data, the CDC also releases something called “excess deaths.” What are those?
