Egg had a Terrible Awful Very Bad Day yesterday and is in Super Sook mode today. He needs *all the snuggles*
(We’re used to the practice drumkit in the background).

He’s ok-ish now but Egg had an awkward crash land yesterday morning &seemed fine, except for scraping his wing stub. He put on a brave face all day but it became visibly clear he’d hurt himself more than he’d let on.
#kookalife #EggBurra
After gradually going downhill later in the day, not being able to hop or manoeuvre at all; becoming subdued &not eating, it became apparent he’d hurt his good side &leg/foot.
Our ever-patient vet is on holidays but made an exception for Egg.
His leg swelled in the night, despite having a special respite nest in his cage, restricting him to floor perches. Apart from the cankle, he woke up sparky but overdid it &got sore &quiet again.
He’s on anti-inflammatories - hence the weigh-in, &a painkiller for his wing.
He is totally milking it.
He will ONLY be hand-fed hand-picked mealworms - that he NEVER normally eats (not normal worms, that we have billions of). He has a heat pad under a ground-perch &is covered in lignocaine cream so looks like a penguin in an oil spill. He’ll likely look a bit crap for a day or so.
(I don’t spread the lignocaine cream on him - he does it. We all got covered in lignocaine cream. It’s fun).
It’s extremely difficult to create a balanced environment that allows him to live his best life safely.
It’s intrinsic in his nature to be high up. The very limited heights I create for him are mostly safe but if he lands badly…we have bruises, but hopefully not breaks. If he’s distracted - say, by outside birds - he forgets he needs to use steps, or to think before he attac.
During active, intense seasons, this is always going to be a possible issue but it’s no worse than what they cop in the wild - I’ve seen some of my wild kookas thru some very debilitating injuries just from day-to-day living.
So EggCankles is gonna be fine &I will let him milk it for 2 more days…
(I was so *not up all night checking on him…)
And now you know kookas have downy eyelids that close from the bottom up.

You should have seen the cage refurb - he was giving Opal The Perch Queen a run for her money 😂 I didn’t video bcs I didn’t expect it to be such a drama.
Note: those little crunchy-clicky beak noises you can hear in the first video…those are peak comfort/safe sounds - like a cat purring; indicates he is feeling 100% secure &reassured in the moment. This is the best sound I could hope for.

Sorry I’m quiet. Nobi has gone missing &I’m run ragged doing everything I can to get him back home if he’s found. He was spotted about 10 properties away (rural, so a long way…). The whole thing is really weird. Egg &I walked about 5km looking &dropping flyers.
The only consolation has been Egg’s absolute absorption in the long walk - “you mean this a Thing we can do?!?”
His conversation about the world around him was astonishing. The walk took us to his home country &he gave indications he knew where he was.

A chorus brought forth a resounding response from a local group (his family?) but I *think it was unwelcoming, altho we didn’t get buzzed.
He elicited great joy from school buses, bus drivers, truckies, &someone who nearly drove off the road (he’s just a kooka, ppl! Settle down!)

Friday was a Very Bad Day. Day 9 of my teen’s covid infection, he had previously had mild symptoms, kept entirely to himself, &should have been improving but was suddenly hit by an immense, migraine-like headache. Not wanting to worry me, he remained isolated but,
…no longer able to use any distractions, he lay alone on his bed, crying in pain, unable to find any position in which his headache eased. He’d taken all the right meds; drank water; had a window open. I thought he was sleeping so I didn’t bother him.
When I knocked &talked to him thru the door at 7pm, he could barely speak. He couldn’t move &the pain in his head was unbearable. I donned a mask &gloves &did his obs. It took all my will power not to hug him.
Knowing the implications of a sudden onset severe headache,

Foraging with Egg. After spending a good while playing on the bank, waiting to see if Opal turned up (no show 😞), Egg was quieter than usual. Misty rain was moving in so it may have been that.

At abt 0:11s, he cocks his head listening to seabird chatter. His direct look at me is a suggestion we move. I didn’t register til I stopped videoing &realised he was fixated on an eagle, while listening intently to the seabirds. He gave a bunjil alert call as we got into the ute.
He’s not stressed abt it but eagle presence has been INTENSE.
We’ve seen a pair of wedgetails every day for 3days, &the juvenile WBsea eagle once.
One wedgie has passed super low over our place on two occasions, &the WBSE passed so low, I was looking down on it from the balcony🤯

Splendour was mismanaged from the first time it set up at Parklands, with zero foresight, contingency planning, or any duty of care consideration.
Parklands is supposed to be a dedicated festival site - it’s 100% not, bcs it’s not engineered for inclement conditions. #SITG
In 2013 conditions were as bad as today, with rivers running thru the expensive camp grounds; road collapse; all patrons forced to walk extremely long distances in pitch dark to get to buses; assaults in the dark;
patrons sustaining hip&joint injuries from hiking thru DEEP mud to get anywhere; extremely ill-conceived ground plan &pathways; *complete lack of planning for traffic on public roads (which begs the question: *who approves it?); lack of staff, and more.
