#BREAKING Ukrainian army confirmed the case of Russia using tear gas on Ukrainian troops. The rumours about Russia using a combination drone+K51 tear gas canister circulated for a longer time, but now they are officially confirmed. Why is this VERY significant? THREAD 1/x
Usage of tear gas can look innocent, as it is being used by police against riots worldwide. Some chemicals causing vision irrigation can be even purchased by civilians (pepper spray). Still, in a war situation ist is very different. Tear gas is banned by intl. conventions 2/x
In 1925, in Geneva the "Protocol for the Prohibition of the Use in War of Asphyxiating, Poisonous or Other Gases, and of Bacteriological Methods of Warfare" was signed. Although it did not define the banned gases, "other gases" wording lets to include tear gas into the basket 3/x
For decades, undersigning nations acknowledged, that tear gas was at least meant by some of signing parties. The U.S. for ex. extra defended its right to use tear gas amid wars for the purpose of riot-control (de facto acknowledging that tear gas is included into the protocol)4/x
In 1960s, amid the Vietnam war, the communist countries led by the USSR, demanded in the UN to categorise any usage of tear gas by the U.S. as a usage of chemical warfare. 5/x
In 1969, UN Secretary General Thant recommended to renews the protocol with a clear wording, covering the usage of tear gas and other harassing agents. Most nations supported this broad interpretation as well. 6/x
Well, after this historical reminder, what do we have now? Russia has already used tear gas on civilians in Kherson in early weeks of the invasion. This could be covered by Russians as a "riot control" interpretation (if the question of per se criminal aggression is ignored) 7/x
Now they use tear gas on Ukrainian soldiers in a combat situation. This case exceeds any (debatable) interpretation of the 1925 Protocol. This (if confirmed) is a clear use of chemical warfare. Now we come to the PR trick. In public opinion, "chemical warfare" is smth lethal 8/x
A news like "Russia uses chemical warfare in Ukraine" wakes images of Syria with sarin nerve agent gas, or WWI with chlorine. The initial public outrage will be changed by skepticism "oh, we thought it was REAL chemical warfare, not some police gas". Moreover, Russians use... 9/x
...K-51 tear gas canisters which are designed for drill purpose. In Russian army, conscripts who are trained to use gas masks, can be put into conditions, where K-51 canisters are being activated to let conscripts feel how gas can intrude an improperly worn mask. 10/x
So out of (absolutely true from the perspective of intl law) news "Russians use chemical warfare" a news "Ukrainians exaggerate" comes. I think, this is the real purpose of Russian actions. They try to push the limits of possible. To prepare the ground for a real gas attack. 11/x
Even if they won't use lethal gas, they distort and erase the limits of legality, and enforce their narrative "nothing is true". This development is extremely dangerous and must be observed with all the vigilance. END.
PS Russians can also try to check how good are Ukrainian troops trained in countering chemical attacks.

On this video, a Russian-speaking woman, allegedly living in Saxony, Germany, openly calls Vladimir Putin to bomb Dresden, obviously to kill Ukrainians. She uses a verb "v'yebat", literally "to fck hard", used in slang for strong hits or heavy bombings 1/x
There are tweets allegedly providing information about her name and activities. There is also a video where she says she does not care about people who write negative review about her restaurant 2/x
Another Russian-speaking woman, allegedly living in German Landshut, Bavaria, has posted another video, glorifying Russian genocidal attacks on Ukraine during the last days. On the video, she dances amid the background of burning Ukrainian streets 3/x

Sure, the Nobel committee did not want to do anything wrong. I also stress: Ales Bialiatski is a great winner, and Memorial can be decorated too.
But! One doesn't need to be a genius to see, why Ukrainians are furious, as the "Slavic Trinity" concept's shadow is not to be ignored
As a great UKR-GER journalist Klimeniouk writes: "it is a seldom quality of the Nobel Committee to take a decision when every winner is noble, but the overall feeling is bad... They put human rights champions from dictatorships and from a democracy into one basket - for what?"
From a UKR perspective, this triple nomination is done with one only purpose: to force UKR to be together with BY and RU, as UKR do not see any important common characteristics of the three winners. And UKR fought for years exactly for the right NOT to be together with RU or BY.

Merkel really said that yesterday, I've checked her speech text on @SZ webpage. It's to note, that in German political lexicon the saying "peace(security) with Russian involvement" (Sicherheit mit Russland, nicht gegen Russland) effectively means that Russia gets a veto right 1/x
In the EU-Ukraine relations this saying also means, no independent EU-Ukraine politics can exist without pre-green-lighting in Kremlin. As Ukraine needs from the West security guarantees AGAINST RU, the politics "no security without RU or against RU" blocks it from the beginning.
More important: Merkel stresses the need for involvement of Russia into European security architecture, adding virtually, that it was the Russia's exclusion out of this architecture which led to continuation of the Cold War, and that the end of the Cold War depends on the West.

Actually, I was taught in the school (early 1990s) in Russia amid geography classes, that Alaska belongs to Russia because "Americans have forged the contract and made out of 100 years rental contract a permanent sell" (передать на вечно - передать навечно). Of course, it was BS.
In their cult song "Don't fool around, the U.S." in 1990, Russian cult band "Lyube" urged the U.S. to return Alaska:
This obsession continued. In 2017, Russians published a song performed by militarized children, with the words "we have Russian Sevastopol and Crimea, and we will return Alaska. If you, uncle Vova (Putin) calls us into the final battle, we follow you".

There is a smearing campagne against me running on Twitter since months, as Russian accounts accuse me in "helping to evade sanctions" while I worked for a German consulting company in Feb 2014 - Jun 2015. The truth is opposite. 1/x ImageImageImageImage
1) In Feb 2014 - Jun 2015 I worked for a German companies group which included business consulting in Russia, Ukraine, Kazskhstan, Poland, Germany and Belarus. It was not a Russia business. We had a strong Ukraine branch, and I was personally involved in promoting of Ukraine. 2/x ImageImageImageImage
2) As sanctions (first against the Yanukovich clan, later against Russian persons and entities) were proclaimed, my role in sanctions consulting was to create a team of colleagues who would give our clients the STRICTEST advises on sanctions compliance. In my interviews... 3/x ImageImageImageImage
