🧵@MFAThai's explanation for their disgraceful abstention on the #UNGA vote on #Ukraine lays bare the ethical vacuum within which Thai foreign policy is made. Lacking a moral compass, @MFAThai tie themselves in knots with this entirely bogus justification. 1/6
Para 1, Thailand restates its "longstanding" & unequivocal commitment to state sovereignty & territorial integrity. Para 2, they throw all that away to not upset Russia in this "volatile & emotionally charged" situation - which is entirely of Russia's making. 2/6
Also, does @MFAThai know of a time when the principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity have been challenged that weren't "volatile and emotionally charged"? 3/6
Para 3, is just nonsense. International law and principles are by their very nature political and contested as they are constantly being negotiated and re-negotiated in light of state practice, opinio juris, evolving global challenges etc. 4/6
Para 4, is just a lame attempt to save face by saying how sorry Thailand is for the poor Ukrainians as well as "many millions around the world.” I'm sure this will really warm the hearts of those going to bed under the roar of Russian rockets. 5/6
With this vote, @MFAThai has put Thailand on the wrong side of history and has relegated our proud nation to the ranks of global pariahs and Russian client states. This should be a watershed moment for Western and other nations who previously saw Thailand as an ally & friend. 6/6
