So, here is Xi Jinping giving his speech at the #20thPartyCongress. How many American or Indian pundits and politicians are watching this? Probably zero.

The refusal to understand one another is the root cause of all geopolitical problems.

After Xi’s speech, read Western media and you will see the ignorance and hubris. No mainstream media will report the specifics of the speech.

Nothing about China’s plan for development.

Instead, it will be recycled cliches — authoritarian gov, Xi is the next Mao blah blah.
Speeches of Chinese leaders are “boring,” while Indian/American leaders give exciting speeches! Why?

In a democracy, politicians need the attention & love of an average person. Thus, the speeches are emotional.

“Make America Great Again”! Woohoo!! 🎉
But emotional promises are cheap.

Thus, Trump never managed to make America great;

and Modi’s vision of “Make in India” — to make India a manufacturing powerhouse — failed to materialise.
Meanwhile, Xi Jinping talked about the “China Dream” in 2012.

And a decade later, China has surpassed that vision to an impressive degree.

How do we know that?

Just look at America’s desperate and extraordinary sanctions to hobble China! 😂

Western media is universally negative about Xi Jinping. Not even close to being objective.

Looking at the last decade, here are some of Xi’s big achievements that I can think top off my head: 🧵 Image
1. China’s GDP more than doubled (from $8.53 trillion in 2012 to $17.7 trillion in 2021).

Not an easy job to grow such a large economy.

Even India’s GDP grew only 77% during that time. Image
2. China’s manufacturing also kept growing in three ways:

1) Total output in value
2) Share of global output
3) Moving up the value chain (becoming more high-tech) Image

Some stats on rural population of India:

🔹900 million (2/3rd of the population) still live in rural areas

🔹And they are distributed among 600,000 villages!

🔹Thus, an average of 1,500 people per village

This demographic situation is holding back India’s growth. Image
So, it’s just pure economies of scale (or lack thereof) that these villages don’t have good infrastructure, schools, hospitals etc.

For India to see growth, there needs to be major urbanisation — through consolidation of villages or migration to cities.
How to make that consolidation/migration happen in a democracy is a challenge. But someone needs to come up with creative incentives.

Empowering and raising the living standards of these 900 million people will tremendously boost India’s GDP and other metrics.

The US policy on China has gone through four phases since the founding of PRC in 1949:
Phase 1, 1949-1972:

Containment and Red Scare, the standard response during the Cold War.

Sanctions and isolation, cut off all relations with China. Image
Phase 2, 1972-2008: Hopeful Times

But the containment failed as China grew powerful and even developed nuclear weapons.

Hence the engagement period for almost four decades.

Started with Nixon’s visit to Beijing to meet with Mao.

Carter and Deng sealed the deal in 1979. ImageImage

USA wasted $6 trillion on wars on Iraq/Afghanistan. Now, many Americans claim they never supported the wars. Amnesia!

But it’s a recurrent theme. U.S. elites comes up with cartoonish narratives of a tyrant; and Americans support the war of the moment.

Only to regret later.
US elites have created a system where America’s prosperity depends on a vast Empire and endless wars.

But this is an unsustainable strategy.

All Empires fail after over-extending themselves military wise, drowning in debt, and ignoring the welfare of their own people.
Not to mention that America creates a lot of enemies. And even vassal states like Saudi Arabia are now starting to rebel.

And the U.S. is not even good at divide and rule anymore.

For example, a smart thing would have been to drive a wedge between China and Russia.

🧵 on devastation of Russia in the 1990s and the rise of #VladimirPutin Image
When the Soviet Union collapsed — officially in Dec 1991 - Russians eagerly embraced America and Europe.

They wanted to be a part of the West and end the centuries-long conflict.

However, the next 8 years would prove to be disastrous beyond belief.
The US handpicked a puppet, Yeltsin, and surrounded him handlers who were really loyal to Wall Street.

For the next years, the US would prop up Yeltsin, who was an alcoholic and an incompetent clown. ImageImage

The US-Saudi fallout is a rare and shocking geopolitical event.

Both countries have a lot of leverage to hurt one another. 🧵
Saudi Arabia can start selling oil for Yuan and maybe for Euros.

The petrodollar is one of the key pillars of America’s Empire.

Take away the need for US dollar to buy oil, the value of US dollar evaporates! Inflation in USA will be double digits in a few days.
Of course, America’s options to retaliate are endless.

- Confiscate all Saudi assets denominated in US dollar

- Remotely turn off all the fighter jets, missile defense systems etc. in Saudi Arabia

- Give missiles to Houthis in Yemen

- Try to “eliminate” Prince Salman (MBS)
