Hey Toronto 👋

What will we do with extra lawn signs? Plastic-eating mushrooms that break them down in weeks instead of 200+ years, obvs.

Vote for 🇨🇦's first municipal climate innovation lab to explore city solutions like this.

2/ I just want to live in an affordable, innovative, efficient, equitable, and corruption-free city. Don't you, Toronto?

If so, tell your friends & vote. Grab a sign & get the word out.

One of the lowest voter turnout rates ever is projected. It may never be easier.
3/ if you haven’t already, check out our climate plan

- pilots of sidewalks and roads made of organic-based solutions that are similar & inexpensive compared to existing solutions

- solar road pilots

- cost effect electrification of transit

I'll admit, I kind of spiraled down this mushroom hole a bit since learning about them. 😂

Toronto Ward 8 residents are asking if I would support a push for an Eglinton LRT inquiry.

Metrolinx said the construction consortium was responsible for delays, but ordered to pay $237m for delays.

Not only do I support an inquiry — contracts will be milestone based. 1/3
2/ Metrolinx blamed the construction consortium (SNC, ACS-Dragados, Aecon, and EllisDon) for the delays, claiming they didn't hit their milestones.

Busineses impacted, 100 closed before 2020, got nothing.

Contractors are rewarded for delays & businesses are penalized.
3/ This project should have been iteratively executed. Built section by section, to minimize disruption — instead of all at once.

We need to shift large public works projects to milestone-based payment, or businesses & taxpayers will be stuck paying inflated bills.

Hey Toronto 👋

Let’s start a city-owned housing company.

Instead of selling off land for cheap to developers, we can develop it ourselves & create rent stabilized apartments. 🥳

#LetsFixIt #topoli #ToRe

tiktok.com/@stephenpunwas…
2/ Under this mayor, Toronto literally sold public land for a toonie.

Building “affordable” housing is quite profitable if you’re paying less than the price of a soda for land.

Why isn’t the city running these rentals?

#topoli #toronto

toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2…
3/ Let’s build medium density, mixed use rental buildings.

We can use the revenues from the commercial component to subsidize low income units in the building.

The current system of housing financialization and monetary policy is breaking how cities work. #LetsFixIt

Why are Toronto politics biased towards Boomer policies?

Respondents to the Toronto Star poll were 50% senior citizens. The story's journo didn't even ask for that info.

The "leading" candidates & most important issues were determined by seniors. Nice.

#topoli #TOVotes
2/ *over 50%.

Anyway, at Better Dwelling we ask our journos to keep files and data, so we can double-check for biased data input. That's basic data journalism.

The Toronto Star published a survey to narrow the leader of a $300b economy without asking how it was done. 🤷‍♂️🤣
3/ This is how we end up with insane election outcomes.

A bunch of people didn't show up in 2016 to vote for the Dems because they thought there was no chance Trump would win.

Vote every single time for whoever you want. It doesn't have to be me, but vote.

Let's skip over which politician in 🇨🇦 said it, but West Africans don't need to learn how to become ready to fight & die for democracy.

They've been fighting and dying for freedom since the 1400s when European slave traders arrived and looted the region.
I guess the complexity of the problem isn’t clear.

The West lent West Africa money for public-private partnership infrastructure.

As the West withdraws aid & rates rise, they risk defaulting & fully privatizing much of their infrastructure.

It’s colonialism 2.0 via banking.
3/ The director from the African development bank was saying it's getting hard not to accept aid that Russia is offering.

25 million people are starving in WA, literally selling the last of their possessions to survive. Their economy was obliterated during COVID.

Still laughing at a door I canvassed.

Me: Hi, I'm Stephen...

Son (30-ish): My dad sends me your articles. DAAAAD. Better Dwelling is here. He's running for mayor.

Me: Oh my name's Stephe...

Dad: Better Dwelling is running for Mayor? We have to help him! *grabs jacket* 1/2
Me: sorry sir. I didn't mean to disturb you, I'm just here to discuss your city concerns.

Him: My concern? They're all crooks! I'll get the whole neighborhood to vote for you! 😂

Loved that:
1) A senior was ready to run out the door & help

2) he calls me better dwelling 🤷‍♂️😂
Gonna hire Saul to be my comms manager if I ever run for office again. 😂

Dude's killing it with sign requests in one of the richest parts of town. Which says a lot about the current situation. Even people thriving in this environment think what's happening is not okay.

Economic disasters are emergencies & Toronto needs to treat it that way.

That was a central thought as we designed our anti-poverty platform.

We can’t solve poverty, but we’ll fight for you even harder than Tory fights for Rogers.

<thread>🧵👇 #topoli #LetsFixIt
2/ the human & economic toll of poverty in TO is unbelievable.

Some 🤯 data

… human:
- over 10k unhoused people
- adding 22/people per week
- avg deaths: 3.5/week (+40%)
- median age at death: 38

economic:
- $5.5 b annual cost
- $600m city has spent on homelessness & housing
3/ we’ll be short 1000s of shelter beds this winter. It will cost people their lives.

We need to act fast, so we’ll erect temporary crisis disaster tents where people can get a bed, shower, & warm meal.

This isn’t a permanent solution but we need to prevent people from dying.
