SECU begins with Brian McIlmoyle from AIC (Airsoft in Canada) $220M sport annually enjoyed by tens of thousands. Media and movie industry about $9B annually. Reliant on airsoft. Hollywood uses 60% less real guns. C21 destroys all this industry

Addresses LEO concerns, acknowledges risk. Suggests 18+ restriction on buying Airsoft. Will prevent majority of police calls, more in line with global experience. Suggests mandatory membership to Airsoft orgs. C21 also impacts paintball, etc

Agrees legal regulations around Airsoft is complicated. Suggests government works with ASIC (Air Soft in Canada)

Dr. Najma from #SpinDocs begins. Lists off gun injury stats. Says she wants evidence based solutions, yet calls for gun bans. Uses “irrefutable” 3 times in a minute. Says guns can maim many people in a short time. Calls for a ban on SKS. Demands ALL semi’s be banned ASAP

Says women are less safe with guns in their home. Wants full handgun ban. Wants docs to be able to have guns quickly removed from your home. Goes on about suicide (guns = 13-16% of all suicides) wants easy, confidential removal of your guns.

Supports the ban on Airsoft is good but not enough. Wants warning labels on toy guns. Wants a national research and data centre.

Wes Winkle from @csaaaofficial begins. Reps 4100 businesses supporting 40k employees. Sounds off on the economic impacts of the handgun freeze and Airsoft ban. 15,000 jobs will be lost. 90% of handguns used in crimes are illegally sourced from US

Says law enforcement don’t support these bans (true). Asks for a compromise. Wants the replica definition changed, consult stakeholders. Also supports the 18+ for Airsoft, wants handgun freeze lifted. Suggests cap on licensees 😳

Mentions various handgun sports. Wants the downgrade of classifications lifted, makes no sense. Requests clarity on OIC’s for mags, storage and UN markings

@DaneLloydMP begins, asks @Docs4GunControl about suicide … method replacement study shows bans have no impact. Naj defers to Dr Magi, Lloyd asks for them to submit their evidence.

Lloyd destroys their injuries data - they bloated their data to include non serious injuries like scratches. Naj says that’s not her experience (goes against the actual Stats Can data 😂)

Lloyd asks Winkle about pistol mags being used in rifles. There’s no data that they’re being used in crimes. Asks about showing RPAL to buy guns, straw purchasing. Rare phenomenon, industry works with NWEST with no funding on pilot program to eliminate.

VOTE 🗳 being called in the House. 15 minutes left in this session. Liberal begins. Asks if reducing the number of legal guns will reduce suicide. Dr. Maji suggests you’re 5x more likely to die by suicide if you have guns in your home.

Suggests limiting the means to suicide will reduce suicide (which goes against the data at Stats Can). Asks Dr’s to describe their trauma dealing with gun shot victims. Dr. Maji says their injury has ripple effects and the victims can’t work.

Lib asks Airsoft guns getting people killed. Asks what the industry what they’ll do to make them look less real. Wan responds, has consulted LEO, says it’s the body language that gets them killed. Cell phones, tripods can also be mistaken for guns.

Wan recommends 18+ measure to reduce instances. Michaud asks why time is cut. Says she doesn’t want to go vote in the House. Should cut CPC’s time. Chair agrees to give full time, continue after the vote.

Michaud asks ASIC if they were consulted by the gov’t on this bill before they banned their sport. McIlmoyle says the government didn’t consult anyone in the industry, many players have submitted to SECU. Michaud says this is strange.

Michaud says the QC airsoft group has been very good at working for solutions. Asks what kind of measures the airsoft industry will do to police their own people. Brian says they want clear regs. Operated with zero straight to ban

18+, waiver at point of sale, clear markings and labels, wants a clear path forward. Says this bill destroys their industry completely and finally. Michaud has one minute left after the vote

We’re back!! Michaud continues. Asks Wes about bans on legal owners, doesn’t stop criminals, but wants to focus on fact that legal guns are also dangerous. Must be “overseen”(?) Says some crimes are committed by legal owners. Asks Wes if he’s aware?

Wes is aware, says respectfully we are completely shutting down the handgun industry to legal owners. Says there is never 100% safety with anything, industry helps reduce injury etc. Asks about $8.5B industry - safe and legal.

NDP MacGregor up next, Airsoft. Went and ref’d a game this summer. Sympathetic to their sport, applauds their advocacy, asks how this ban impacts their community. Martin takes the Q. Says players can’t sell. Can keep one’s they have, but police are empowered to confiscate.

Worries about overstep. MacGregor interrupts on time. Supports the suggested measures (18+ etc). Wants to know how to fit their amendments. Can we amend or scrap and rewrite that part? Martin says they should have been consulted. They are willing to help with amendments.
