Lots of confusing terms used in #Texas politics: to clarify, a tax rate that is above the "no-new-revenue" rate means rate payers will pay more next year than last year. #Taxes
1/3
But the "no-new-revenue" rate does not necessarily mean the government entity will collect the same amount; in most cases next year they will collect more revenue due to new properties added to the tax rolls.
2/3
Even if the tax rate is lower next year than this year, if your appraised value is higher, you will pay more in taxes this year over last year.

P.S. Look at the posting for the public hearing for your taxing entity's proposed tax rate; state law requires them to notify you that the proposed rate is a tax increase even if the rate itself is lower.

🧵Thread on the gaslighting taking place regarding @TXsecofstate Forensic Audit Division (FAD) letter to #HarrisCounty Elections Administrator Clifford Tatum in #Houston.

The 15-page letter w/docs was sent Tuesday, but someone leaked it to a reporter who then posted 2 pages and misled the public about its full contents. That person instead focused on the Texas Secretary of State sending the inspectors to Harris County, but...

Per a 1997 state law, the SOS is required to send inspectors to any county upon the request of 15 or more voters and has been sending them to Harris County, the state’s most populous, and many others for years.

Commission includes Harris County Judge, County Clerk, Tax Assessor Collector, and the chairs of the county's Democratic and Republican parties.
Note: the clerk and tax assessor collector, both elected officials, would have been in charge of elections in the county, but in 2020 commissioners court voted 3-2 to use an appointed elections administrator instead.

Today the Harris County Elections Commission will meet at 1:00 pm. There's only one item on the agenda:
"Request for a discussion with the Harris County Elections Administrator regarding
logistics and operations for the November 8, 2022 elections."
ICYMI: @TXsecofstate sent a letter to the county on Tuesday outlining initial findings in the ongoing forensic audit of the 2020 general election and asking for the elections admin to respond w/plans to prevent similar problems in #election2022

Harris County #Houston special meeting and public hearing on tax increase now beginning w/livestream here: harriscountytx.gov/Government/Cou…
The court's 3 Democrats are present, the 2 Republicans are not. They have quorum to vote on anything except approving the tax increase.
Today they must decide whether or not to post notice of a compromise tax rate. So far, the only rate they've posted is the original tax rate the two Republicans object to.

That was yesterday's special meeting; today's special meeting is scheduled for 2:30. The only tax increase rates posted are the original rate proposed along w/the "no new revenue" and "voter approval rate."

Those wishing to speak must sign up 2 hours before the meeting.
In addition, commissioners court will take up an agenda of 242 items. Agenda & Notice of Public Hearing on Tax Increase are available here: agenda.harriscountytx.gov
Just fyi, quorum is three for anything except approving a tax increase- that requires 4 members present. Even without the 2 R's, commissioners court can vote to post notice of a different tax rate proposal.
