Interesting fact re incumbent PM Sunak - he founded a hedge fund firm called Theleme Partners.
The Abbey of Theleme is a ref to Francois Rabelais, the hilarious genius who parodied contemporary Renaissance life. The abbey was unlike any other & links to the Hellfire Clubs...🧵
The Thélème motto was "do what thou wilt" (FAY CE QVE VOVDRAS), a corruption of earlier Christian doctrine. In the abbey this meant that the monks & nuns admitted should do as they please - by virtue of their natural grace, anything they would want to do would be God approved
This natural grace was that they were the "best" of society, the most perfect, well-bread, well-educated, rich, and hawt.
The structure of the abbey was based around a hexagonal shape, just like the Francis Dashwood’s c 18th mausoleum at West Wycombe, above the Hellfire Caves
Dashwood's eternal resting place is in the shape of an anti-monastery, blocking views of the church, in the most prominent position in the landscape possible. It also overlooks his pleasure gardens & Palladian mansion where luxurious & outrageous parties were held.
References to the Abbey are also included in the fabric of a building along the river at nearby Medmenham, such as the Thelemic phrase in this fireplace.
River transport facilitated the movement of ladies of the night from London to the venue for monks & nuns dress up parties.
Dashwood was one of the wealthiest men in politics in his time, just like Sunak.
Dashwood was also Chancellor of the Exchequer, just like Sunak was.
Dashwood shaped the world around him to his liking....
Anyway, make of all this what you will...
To me, Sunak is making a knowing nod to Dashwood & the history of powerful men involved in endless gentlemen's clubs and social networks of power & influence.
