.@ZelenskyyUa and @vonderleyen open the conference both addressing the short-term need for fast assistance to get through this winter and the medium to long term help requires to rebuild Ukraine and bring it into the European Union.
Powerful remarks by PM Smyhal, naming some of the recent victims of Rus. missile terror. Since early October alone, more than 300 missiles plus hundreds of suicide drones attacked 🇺🇦. He says that 60% of 🇺🇦 budget goes to the army and the country needs regular financial support.

The 🇺🇦 civil society, experts, soldiers, generals & politicians have seen the efficacy of 🇩🇪 weapons like the Iris-T SLM, Gepards, PzH-2000 & Mars 2. In order to save lives of civilians and soldiers and to win the war faster, they request Western tanks and IFVs. #FreeTheLeopards
The lovely illustration summarizes the request for a European initiatives for providing Ukraine with the only Western modern, mass produced main battle tank: the Leopard 2 (& Marder IFVs)…
It literally says: the Gepards in 🇺🇦 are waiting for the Leopards 🐆
The success of the Iris T SLM only makes the calls for the Leo’s louder. It illustrates that strategic decisions to provide modern weapon systems (taken in May for the Iris-T) yield effective results down the road. That’s why it’s high time to start planning for Leo’s now.
Much has been said about the short-comings of 🇩🇪‘s support for #Ukraine, in the military realm. But today’s #RecoveryOfUkraine conference underlines 🇩🇪 leadership for a European led, inclusive recovery, with an eye for the short, medium and long term. /1
On the one hand, one might ask WHY already talk and plan Ukraine’s recovery, while Russian missiles and Iranian suicide drones hammer civilian infrastructure. But the US began first recovery planning for Europe in 1941 before it entered the war. /2
Ukraine understands that very well and kicked off the EU accession process and recovery planning few days into the war.
Focus of any talks obviously has to focus on the today and helping 🇺🇦 to win this war quickly and get through this winter. /3
Eight months into the war, the 🇩🇪 Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Kyiv. When arriving the he said “We not only stand by your side. We will continue to support Ukraine economically, politically and militarily.” spiegel.de/ausland/ukrain…
According to the Office of the Federal President, Steinmeier and Selenskyj now want to make a joint appeal to German cities and municipalities to establish new partnerships with Ukrainian municipalities in the short term and help the people there through the winter.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is pressing for a large contribution from Germany to finance the state in wartime. 🇺🇦 needs 4-5 billion dollars every month for its budget. “We believe that Germany could take over about $500 million per month, especially with a view to 2023,” @arodnyansky.
“Russia is flattening Ukrainian cities and destroying critical infrastructure, including dams and power plants...
Cynically, Russia and its Western supporters are holding out an olive branch. Please do not be fooled: An aggressor cannot be a peacemaker,” writes @AndriyYermak. /1
“🇺🇦 seeks peace. 🇺🇦 longs for peace. But our conditions are known. We have voiced them many times…🇺🇦will not succumb to peace by coercion. Ukraine needs clear guarantees that when Russia leaves the illegally occupied territories, it will never return.” /2 washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
“We believe any deal should start with respect for our right to self-determination, the inviolability of our sovereignty and the integrity of our borders. Without it, European security will always depend on the whims of whoever happens to reside in the Kremlin.” /3
For months, Germans (mostly with themselves) are discussing whether or not to provide tanks to #Ukraine. @anneapplebaum reflects that the debate is more a question whether the country arrived in the new reality, is willing to lead or hide behind others. /1 theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
“Germany has tanks that it could offer to Ukraine, but it doesn’t. The German government has prevented other European countries that own German-made tanks from sending theirs as well. Yet Germany has sent many other heavy weapons, including some that look like tanks.” /2
“Modern, Western “main battle tanks” that can be used to attack Russian forces could give Ukraine an advantage. But none are on the way. Quite a few Germans think this refusal is a form of dithering or hair-splitting, and when they talk about it, they get angry quite quickly.” /3
