🔴 Shortly before his murder on October 16, Colombian journalist #RafaelMoreno had protected his investigations by sharing them with Forbidden Stories using the #SafeboxNetwork.

We have already begun to pursue his work, alongside many partner journalists. #ProyectoRafael
This is the mission of Forbidden Stories: to continue the work of silenced journalists around the world.

If they are kidnapped, jailed or murdered, we mobilize our media partners to continue their investigations and publish them worldwide.
Rafael Moreno's investigations disturbed many people in the department of Córdoba where he lived. He denounced illegal activities, threats to the environment and, above all, local corruption, exposing shady contracts.
Threatened for years, the journalist from Córdoba knew that his constant revelations were putting his life in danger. This is why he wanted to share his information with Forbidden Stories.

In discussions with our team, he said ⤵️
Thirteen days before he was shot by a sicario, Rafael Moreno was warned by two men on a motorbike: “Do you think lead can't go through you?”
The threats were finally carried out. But Rafael Moreno's assassins must know one thing: killing the journalist won’t kill the story.
Before his death, Rafael shared elements of the investigations he was working on with @FbdnStories, so that if an attempt was made on his life, other journalists could pursue his work.

Laurent Richard announced the creation of #ProyectoRafael.

Rafael Moreno wanted his work to be continued.

That is what we will do. Together. With @elespectador, @CLIP_AmericaLat, @NoticiasCaracol, @LigaNoSilencio, @cuestion_p, @OCCRP, @AristeguiOnline, @SinCadenasECU and others who will join soon.

#ProyectoRafael

In India, fact-checking can put you behind bars.

On June 28, fact-checker @zoobear was arrested by Indian police. His crime? A 2018 tweet about an old Hindi film, taken by the ruling party as ‘hurting religious sentiment’ in the country.
Several months before his arrest, @FbdnStories interviewed Zubair about why his fact checking disturbs the Indian authorities. In the interview never released until today, Zubair explained the modus operandi behind the attacks against him and other fact-checkers in India.
“They cannot file a complaint against me for writing a story because we have facts with us in our stories (…) They cannot attack us on the story that we’ve written, so they are looking to attack me for any other unrelated tweet” – @zoobear

(3/12) Image

For the past several months, we have been working with threatened journalists around the world on a new way to defeat impunity for crimes against the press.

It has a name: the #SafeBoxNetwork. On #WorldPressFreedomDay, we are thrilled to introduce it to the world. #thread (1/12)
The #SafeBoxNetwork was founded on one simple premise: to ensure that a journalist's sensitive information does not disappear with them if they are kidnapped, imprisoned or murdered.

Since the beginning of the year, eight journalists have been killed in Mexico alone. (2/12)
How does the #SafeBoxNetwork work?

First, threatened journalists can keep their sensitive information safe by sharing it with our global network of journalists. We store it securely without working on it. (3/12) Image
