TODAY IS WORLD STROKE DAY.
A simple thread on Stroke.
Please share

Stroke happens when Blood flow to the Brain is cut off. Can either bursting of blood vessels or blockage of vessels

About 6.5 Million people die from Stroke each year, About 6% of these deaths are aged 15- 49
Why do people have Stroke ?

There are risk factors for Stroke, Some we can change some we cannot change

Those we can change
-Hypertension
Diabetes
Smoking
Alcohol
Use of hard drugs
High blood fats
Sedentary lifestyle
Some organ diseases
Oral contraceptive pills
Obesity
Those you cannot change

Being a Male
Black
Family history of stroke
A previous stroke
Aging
Some inheritable causes
Symptoms of a stroke

Symptoms depend on part of the brain affected.

Common ones are:
Speech problem
Difficulty moving a part of the body
Deviation of Mouth
Headache
Vomiting
Movement problem
Problem swallowing
Confusion
One of the reason there are increased death in stroke patients include Late presentation.

If you notice any of this, Rush to a Hospital.
Presenting within 3 to 4 hours after a stroke can help save a large part of the Brain

ACT FAST (See picture)
What could happen If stroke patients don’t get care?

-They could die
-Food can get into the chest causing a terrible chest infection that can kill them
-They could have seizures
-They can have depression and psychiatric problem
-Can have memory problems
-Can have another stroke
How do I reduce my chances of a stroke

-Check your blood pressure
-Avoid smoking and alcohol
-Exercise
-Cut away hard drugs
-Eat healthy
-If you have Hypertension or Diabetes use your medication
-Ensure routine health checks
IS THERE PARTIAL STROKE?
NOTHING LIKE PARTIAL STROKE

The word Partial stroke is a misnomer for a condition called TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK.
Some people notice a side of their body was weak for few hours or speech changed then later get Better.

Don't ignore

This is a red flag and should go to a Hospital. A TIA (so called partial stroke) is just telling you, Be careful you are about to have a stroke

A lot of people when they have SORE THROAT just think it is a minor thing and Go

I have licked tom tom or hot water, it has gone.

But NO

That sore throat might look mild AND disappear now but if not well attended to cause a deadly disease later in future

I'll explain
RETWEET
Sore throat which is an infection of the throat can be caused by Viruses, Bacteria, etc

The one we are worried about is the Bacteria called STREPTOCOCCUS
(I know this sounds familiar STREPTOKOKKUS & STAPHYLOKOKKUS cleanser..

Remember those vendors..lol)

Moving on
When you have this Infection with the Streptococcus that's when you then have the Fever, pain with swallowing food, body weakness

The go thing now is people just lick tomtom, go to chemist to buy drugs, hot water & many more

Oh yeah you feel better after all, Disease disappear?

A new Monday and about 5 cases of Kidney Damages have already been admitted from the weekend.

The demographic is not elderly or old. These are young and middle aged people.

They will probably be needing Dialysis for life except they have about 30 million for a new kidney
There really is a Pandemic of kidney diseases in Nigeria.

Every one that works in health facilities will tell you ...How much Kidney diseases becomes a burden financially to both the patient and relatives

It is cost intensive. Some families even sell their properties to pay
Talk of the life long medications , talk of dietary restrictions, talk of frequent blood tests and transfusion, frequent pains from needle pricks
Talk of stress waiting for Dialysis because we don't have enough Dialysis centers in Nigeria

The best is to safeguard your kidneys

Just got sad

Remember I mentioned last week we did a community outreach 2 weeks ago, found lot of Hypertensives, counselled & connected them to care

There was a Man I took time to talk to him about his Bp, but he ignored it all.
This morning he was admitted with a Stroke.
We took our time explaining the implications of a high blood pressure

But all our plea fell on deaf ears. He Blamed it on the stress..we rechecked the blood pressure again to confirm after resting ...

We counselled on what blood pressure is
Another reminder....Please take your blood pressure seriously...

The leading cause of Stroke is still Hypertension

Please know your blood pressure at every chance you get.
A stroke is a damage to a brain
