#ImranKhan’s political lack of acumen (he has cunning) has meant that he has managed to fall from positions of great strength. 1st VONC. Having been shuttled into power with vast popular support & Deep State support, he managed to fall out with allies, under perform & take 1/11
all kinds of unnecessary steps to entrench himself. Destabilised/made insecure too many & pulled himself down. Post VONC because of PDM divide/indecisions, his big jalsas, by-election victories & constant politicking he managed to resurrect himself. All he needed to do was 2/11
to wait out some months. Floods, inflation, fuel/electricity prices, lacklustre governance, Bajwa on way out, burden of his own govt’s legacy on economy etc means that PDM lame duck in coming elections. PTI also rules 2 provinces. But again his COAS appointment obsession. 3/11
Have past COAS choices worked for anyone? Mil on backseat due to his popularity & the anonymity social media provided PTI to castigate it. It very likely won’t interfere in election. IK would’ve kept any future COAS in check with big victory. But seemingly desperate he kept 4/11
blowing hot & cold. Negotiating and castigating. Dallying with Faiz. Went many steps too far. Created point of no return vis-a-vis Estab. And now a very uncertain situation with the #LongMarch. Does he physically occupy Isbd? If he is repelled then what? What if bloodshed 5/11
Will movement last if he/others jailed & others jump ship? Latter has started. So far I speak only of bad bad decisions that have brought him from positions of great success to first ouster from govt & now potential ouster from politics. Purely his fortunes. Haven’t dwelt on 6/11
what would’ve happened if he had stayed in power or now comes to power. He doesn’t talk issues but mouths controversies. He’s anti democratic & doesn’t care 2 hoots about parliament. He happily bends & abuses the law to persecute opponents. He craves sycophancy & assembles 7/11
the worst around himself. His governance hapless. His ego drives everything. He leaves no room for divergence, debate & dissent & would’ve again castigated all opposition/tried to suppress them. So in all likelihood his next stint would be worse than his 1st. In a way his 8/11
manufactured showdown bodes well for democracy as it pushes military back. But I don’t see him emerging intact. He even has benefit of various highly partisan judges/sections of media behind him. He also forgets the many skeletons in his closet that are now coming out & 9/11
catching up. The great lease/license he has been gifted. He repeats the corruption/conspiracy/looters mantra & Kamikaze fashion, glaze eyed & glum, leading his devotees down a highly uncertain path. As cult leaders do. With terrible outcomes. A highly charismatic but deeply 10/11
flawed, ego maniac. & when Pak faces tremendous challenges; hangs precariously in terms of eco, political & institutional survival. He has galvanised many. But given them no plan, norms, ethics, processes, systems. Nor younger leaders. May the day shine well for Pakistan 🇵🇰11/11

At prospect of IK’s compromising videos following reactions from followers: (1) They are fake. Shows there isn’t any capacity or intent to objectively gauge or to ask for legit forensics. It’s blind faith. This despite the fact that the man has a long & known past of sexual 1/11
escapades & promiscuity. Also it would matter if any clips were recent or from distant past. Because if recent & authentic then quite apart from Arts 62/63 piety clauses & his entire persona & political use of Islam there is also the Q of how such activity can compromise 2/11
leader of a nuclear nation. Already a few lame preemptive PTI videos on how fake audios/videos done. Surely any devout supporter should ask for authentic international verification to fully clear this thing/expose fakers. But No (2) Nothing can make us doubt IK. Again this 3/11
Reminders for IK Red Liners. 1) we opposed illegal detention/torture against citizens in the past. You laughed & said they deserve it. 2) We always said don’t brand people as thieves, traitors & heretics. You continued to presume guilt & abused them 3) We said military has 1/10
always meddled in politics/has commercial agendas. You called us unpatriotic for this. 4) We said judiciary direly needs reforms. You called it contempt of court. 5) We said an elected PM ousted by deep state. You said he should be thrown in a dungeon for life. 6) We said 2/10
false cases filed/NAB hounding opposition with political agenda. You called these excuses of criminals. 7) We said free speech needs protection. You said anti-state speech/criticism of institutions should be banned/punished. 8) We shall jalsas/protests a political right 3/10
What the #SupremeCourt Order fatally doesn’t appear 2 account for is the following: (1) Political parties run as fiefdoms/personality cults in Pakistan. What if the party head does egregious things or becomes an erratic & dangerous egomaniac or otherwise 1/5 #COAS#HamzaShahbaz
undermines democratic principles/norms or commits other outrages? (2) What if he then becomes entrenched because of the initial calculus of seats? Is a member then bound to not dissent on essentially national & larger than party considerations? An additional question is that 2/5
what’s the point of any voting at all? Everything is predetermined by electoral outcomes as to numbers in assembly. Members should then just sign over to party their votes to be used as it wishes. VONC becomes ineffectual except if coalition partners break off. While clamping 3/5
An ego-centric cricket player finally found prominence in politics when he was adopted/catapulted by Deep State. He made an ass of himself in office & was ousted by a valid VONC. His ego couldn't take it & he declared everyone except himself a traitor, claimed that a foreign 1/n
conspiracy ousted him, announced threat to his life, said nation ought to be nuked instead of his opponents coming to power, & exhorted Deep State to readopt him or else. Along the way he started posturing as if divinely anointed, routinely slandered his opponents, & incited 2/n
violence against them. His stance on desecration of holy places by his zealots was dubious. He blatantly violated Constitution. He regularly instigated his comrades to flout the law. He incited violence against his detractors. He threatened to bring country to a standstill 3/n
Imran khan came to power supported by a cultish fan base; a hopeful following; blatant military support; coalition partners; lotas & big financiers. This was the base of his so-called tabdeeli. He then strutted & fretted upon the stage for 4 years with very little to show. 1/10
His core cult is intact & vocal (amplified by some partisan media); chunks of his following (rural & urban working classes & more sensible middle/upper middle class voters - tired of empty slogans) has eroded, military has badly burnt fingers but some loyal top brass remains 2/10
coalition partners have abandoned; lotas bolted; & financial sugar daddies ruing they invested in him. His ouster politically expected & perfectly legal. He was sub-par, silly & aloof. Alienated many. Yet he continues to mischaracterize it as an international conspiracy that 3/10
FIRs in #MasjidENabvi Outrage DON'T allege blasphemy. ESSENTIAL to understand. Context: Chapter XV of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) contains offences against religion. It has pre-Zia colonial era sections & post-Zia blasphemy sections. Colonial era sections stem from Indian 1/8
Penal Code, 1860. Meant to protect freedom of exercise of religion & prevent one person from insulting religion of another. Thus curbing of hate speech & resulting law & order disruption & dissolution of society. Importantly, they are meant for all religions & to protect each 2/8
creed from attack on its beliefs & practices as well as protection of minority faiths. They all specifically require intent. They all have definitional specificity. In short they provide various protections & are hard to abuse. These include ss 295, 295-A, 296, 297 & 298. 3/8
