1) Social security kept my mom afloat to take care of my 2 brothers & sister after my dad died because he couldn't afford his anti-rejection medication that he was getting through Medicare after a kidney transplant caused by kidney failure due to his lifelong battle with diabetes
2) The diabetes that we could barely afford insulin for. In fact, he consolidated his insulin down from 2 vials, to 1 that was a mix in order to save money.
3) It wasn't just my dad's life that was effected. It was my mom's, my siblings and our children who have never had the chance to meet their grandfather.
4) If you vote for Republicans, who are against all these things, you are voting to put more families through this. It makes me want to vomit.
This is not something I usually talk about. But seeing what the Republican party has turned into, I couldn't remain silent. After watching Obama speak about people being on social security, I felt I had to speak up.
People this is a real threat if we don't show up to the polls.
I know it's late, and no one will probably see this, but I had to get it out while I had the words and the courage.
This is the video
H/T @Acyn for capturing and sharing all these clips
As a veteran, a gun owner & a mom of school aged kids, I have some thoughts on gun violence.
Weapons of war, like AR style rifles, do not belong in the hands of ordinary citizens. And definitely not 18 year olds. I'll tell you why. ⬇️ #VetsForGunSafety
The military trains our troops on the use of these weapons for war. They serve no other purpose than to slaughter the enemy. They aren't used for hunting because you'd destroy your dinner. Additionally ⬇️ #VetsForGunSafety
Military members have to requalify every year on their weapons. They go through rigorous & serious training on handling their guns. Plus, they don't get to keep their weapons w/ them. They are stored at the armory & issued only upon deployments or training. ⬇️ #VetsForGunSafety
🧵 Afghanistan hearings on now with @SecBlinken Going to try to keep up.
1st Q - verified there were 17k when Biden admin came into office. @SecBlinken says "several thousand" approved under trump admin. And quadrupled the number of people processing SIV applications.
@BobMenendezNJ aks about the CCR, and the changes/ answer..... @SecBlinken says last admin tried to push it through, Blinken says they assessed it and decided it was ineffective.
@RepAndyLevin up now. Says pulling out was the right thing to do. Asks @SecBlinken about 3rd countries and what they're doing to help us with refugees. Sec says he thinks current capacity is enough.
@RepAndyLevin now asking about women's rights advocates and journalists etc, how do they define who is "at risk" and how will they be assisted.
@SecBlinken says they are working on ways to get them out of Afghanistan. And they are trying to figure out who would be at risk from the new government.
@RepMeuser is "disappointed" in @SecBlinken written statement and calls his answers today excuses. Blames him for people falling off airplanes as they took off. Says there was pallets of cash left behind???
