Two of my kids have tested positive for Covid on PCR tests.
The depths of my sadness and anger are indescribable. We have tried SO SO hard to keep ourselves and community safe.
Here’s what I know:
🧵
The sniffles and coughs started earlier this week in our family. Sickness has been rampant at their schools - especially the preschool.
As privileged folks, we’ve been testing regularly.
Every rapid test has been negative for ALL the entire week, even today.
We kept our 3 boys home from school a couple days this week, because it’s the responsible thing to do. We sent them back today, symptom-free. But we took PCRs last night, just to be extra cautious. The email with positive results for 2 came midday. The rest of us, negative so far
A bit of neurobiology of rewards, to add to this great convo with @CovingtonEDU. 1) The brain is driven by rewards. What we reward, the brain seeks out more of. This is how we've created an ed culture consumed by grades, not learning. We reward "rightness" with grades ...
so the brain wants more of what gave them that reward. It's the science of how dopamine regulates the reward and motivation systems of the brain.
I talk about it at the 8:00 min mark here:vimeo.com/manage/videos/…
2) The brain desensitizes to dopamine/rewards. (This is why addicts need a bigger hit or harder hit.)
In schools ...
A sticker might work to motivate a K-2 learner.
By 3-5 your tossing fun size candies.
In MS, it's pizza/donut parties.
In HS ... good luck!
