UPDATE: DR is now saying that there is a chance the red bloc could, by the narrowest of margins, retain its majority. They’re putting Frederiksen’s bloc at 87 seats now. When Greenland/North Atlantic results are in (4 seats) if red wins three they can get to 90. Image
Ah that deeply glorious and weird part of a Scandinavian election night where the parties traipse through parliament building followed by singing, flag waving supporters Image
“Thank you”- PM Mette Frederiksen clearly thinks she’s sneaked it…#valg2022 Image
Who said PR isn’t exciting
Really poor performance for Venstre (main centre right party). Down 19- worst performance since 1988. Governing Social Democrats actually up 2 seats, even though election was called in difficult circumstances for Frederiksen (amid fallout from Mink scandal). Image
Venstre leader Jakob Ellemann-Jensen essentially conceding that a left bloc maj looks likely, albeit by narrowest of margins. Rasmussen's bargaining power has diminished rapidly even in the last hour.
Now this is a ballot paper Image
Social Democrats now projected to be on 50 seats- their best performance since 2001.
In triumph and to Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’, PM Mette Frederiksen has returned to Parliament to address supporters Image

Keir Starmer: “The Home Secretary says the asylum system is broken. Who broke it?” #PMQs
Sunak: “Let’s look at our record on immigration- we gave the British people the opportunity to vote for Brexit.”
Starmer: “If the asylum system is broken and they’ve been in power for 12 years how can it be anyone’s fault but theirs?”

We calculate, that such is the ministerial churn since July, that the taxpayer could be liable for over *£722,000* in ministerial severance payments. We contacted ministers and their departments about how many have/will accept the money.

Our findings 👇

When we asked, some departments didn't seem to want to engage with this- telling us to wait for their annual reports or FOI it (!) Quite a few MPs did not respond to our request for clarification about their intentions. But this is public money at a time of spending cuts.
Also worth bearing in mind that the ministerial severance package is far more generous than an average member of the public might expect, more generous too than civil servants' terms who had served a similar length of time. MPs ultimately decide on all this stuff.

This will be controversial inside the Commons and out. The House is in recess for some of the I’m a Celebrity fortnight but not all. During that time Mr Hancock’s constituents will not have representation in Parliament, instead he’ll be in Australia. thesun.co.uk/tv/20284864/ma…
In a perhaps not unrelated move, Mr Hancock also withdrew from the race to be Treasury Select Committee Chair earlier in the week.
Indeed when Nadine Dorries appeared on the show in 2012 she (briefly) had the whip removed. theguardian.com/politics/2012/…

Context: the UK’s institutions and British society are dominated by those who have attended fee-paying schools. For example, the new cabinet is 60%+ private school (vs 7% of population). Private schoolers remain significantly over-represented at Oxford and Cambridge themselves.
Strange there’s so little focus on those inequities yet these stories about alleged Oxbridge and university admissions unfairness crop up on the front pages unfailingly, again and again.
When you dig down into these stories, they’re often pretty remarkable. Part of the irritation seems to be that so many state schoolers are now applying to top universities (which can only be unalloyed success) and that private schoolers are facing more competition (the cheek).

Another historic day. Just like the last one. Rishi Sunak is trying to walk a very slender tightrope- between the change he knows politically he needs the public to think he is, and the consistency which party management demands. Our film on the day. 🎥
As I say in the piece, there is no sense that Sunak is on the left of the party. He is not a wet. On the contrary, in so many ways he’s firmly on its right. Dry as dust economically. Ardent Brexiter. Supporter of the Rwanda policy etc. In that sense Cabinet choices not a surprise
Instead it’s part of a longer trajectory of Conservative politics. Sunak has two competing objectives. Present a sense that “grown ups are back.” And balance the party. Sunak has calculated that the best way of achieving both objectives is to restore much of Johnson’s Cabinet.

Sunak on the steps of Downing St as PM:

"I've just been to Buckingham Palace and accepted HM the King's invitation to form a govt in his name."
It's only right to explain to you why I'm standing here as your new PM. Our country is facing a profound economic crisis. The aftermath of Covid still lingers. Putin's war in Ukraine has destabilised energy markets and supply chains the world over."
Sunak: "I want to pay tribute to my predecessor Liz Truss. She was not wrong to want to promote growth in this country. It is a noble aim. And I admired her restlessness to create change. But some mistakes were made. Not borne of ill will or bad intentions...
