WTAF: Photos reveal that the NRA recently rallied with their candidates and THE PROUD BOYS in opposition to a commonsense gun safety ballot measure in Oregon. 🧵 #Measure114#orpol
Measure 114 is a commonsense measure that would require background checks on all gun sales and prohibit the sale of high capacity magazines that make mass shootings even deadlier. It will appear on Oregon voters’ ballots next week. voteyeson114.org
Unsurprisingly, while the majority of Oregonians and Americans support background checks, the gun lobby has come out against this measure, and has leaned into tired rhetoric – from fear mongering to pretending gun safety laws are unconstitutional – to try and dissuade voters.
But theses extremists showing up on Oct 8 outside the Oregon State Capitol is more than just a special interest group opposing legislation that hurts their bottom line – rather, it's a perfect example of how deeply the gun lobby embraces extremism.
At a rally opposing the Oregon gun safety ballot measure, nearly two dozen “Proud Boys” who were in attendance were lauded from the stage.
And this wasn’t even the first time that the “Proud Boys” have shown up to support gun lobby activity in Salem.
Did the NRA distance themselves? Of course not. They had an official speaker at the event, a tent with materials, and more. An NRA sign was front and center on a podium from which people called for President Biden to be charged with treason…
One speaker echoed the racist “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory, claiming that the Biden administration, United Nations, and drug cartels were purposefully importing “terrorists, murders, rapists, the unsavory from 174+ different nations into our country.”
Sadly, rallying with Proud Boys is who the modern NRA is. If you're in Oregon, or have friends and family in the state, this is Measure 114's opposition.
But, if you’re an Oregon voter who believes that commonsense gun safety measures make our communities and our families safer, I encourage you to learn more about #Measure114 and to VOTE YES next Tuesday 11/8. voteyeson114.org#orpol

This morning in Philadelphia, some Pennsylvania @MomsDemand leaders and I met with Marge LaRue and Meredith Elizalde - the grandmother and mother of Nick Elizalde, a 14-year-old student shot to death outside of Roxborough High School last month after a football scrimmage. 🧵
Meredith said she promised herself in the aftermath of her son’s death that she would not let the city or nation look away from what the unrelenting gun violence crisis has ripped from her - her only child. inquirer.com/news/philadelp…
Meredith - a teacher - ran up the hill when she heard gunfire during the football game. She found Nick on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest. She held her son waiting for help, but because of traffic it arrived too late to save Nick’s life. inquirer.com/news/nicolas-e…
IOWA: Gun safety is LITERALLY on the ballot this November! If passed, Public Measure 1 would threaten to eliminate critical laws, including: prohibitions on gun possession by convicted felons and domestic abusers and minimum age, secure storage, and sensitive areas restrictions. twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Listen to Black Hawk County @SheriffTonyT who knows that Public Measure 1 IS NOT the same as the 2nd Amendment and would have dangerous consequences and threaten public safety. #IAlegis
You can’t be tough on crime if you’re weak on guns – take it from Iowa law enforcement leaders like Linn County Sheriff Gardner who knows that gun laws save lives and keep communities safe. #IAlegis
COLORADO: Here’s *another* reason to closely look at your GOP AG candidate @JohnKellnerCO’s record on gun safety. He backs Bullets Both Ways, a fringe gun group that pushes to put guns in schools and arm school staff and teachers. #copolitics
We know @JohnKellnerCO is soft on gun safety since he has NRA’s endorsement. And NOW we’re learning he supports guns in schools—in Colorado, a state which has suffered from horrific school shootings.
Arming teachers does not work. Putting loaded guns in schools does not work. If @JohnKellnerCO and radical gun rights groups had their way, Colorado’s classrooms would become a warzone with open firearms in immediate proximity of small children.
NEW: FBI background check done by a licensed gun dealer blocked the St Louis school gunman from buying an AR-15 on Oct 8. The denial reason is unknown, but likely that the state had adjudicated him to be mentally ill. An unlicensed dealer sold him the gun. ksdk.com/article/news/c…
The gunman bought a AR-15 from an unlicensed seller who had legally bought the gun from a licensed dealer in 2020. St. Louis police said THERE IS NO EXISTING LAW THAT PREVENTED THE UNLICENSED SALE, WHICH DOES NOT REQUIRE A BACKGROUND CHECK IN MISSOURI.
Police said they responded to a domestic disturbance on Oct. 15 at the family's home, but determined that the suspect was lawfully permitted to possess his firearm: "A third-party was contacted and took possession of the firearm so that it would no longer be stored in the home."
NEW: The family of the teen gunman who murdered a teacher and student in a St. Louis school had recently called police and asked them to take his AR-15. There's no Red Flag Law in Missouri, so police gave the gun to a third-party, but the teen got it back. abcnews.go.com/US/st-louis-sc…
Per usual, lots of red flags in this case, from a "manifesto" to police being called to the shooter’s house at least six times - once for a suicide attempt. But because Missouri doesn't have a Red Flag Law, police couldn't remove his guns and determine if the teen posed a danger.
The new Bipartisan Safer Communities Act establishes an enhanced background check process and investigative period for buyers ages 18, 19 and 20, including checking with state and local law enforcement and state or local courts before a sale proceeds.
