OK, I've decided: Instead of giving a narcissistic billionaire $8/month to pay off his debt, I'm gonna pay the main Mastodon development team $10/month (at least for awhile) to help upgrade server capacity.
No, this doesn't mean I'm bailing from here yet; this will remain my primary social media site as long as possible, while cross-posting over there.
And no, this doesn't mean I'm convinced that Mastodon is *the* replacement for Twitter if it comes to it. HOWEVER...
...as a former web developer myself, I know how much work goes into this sort of thing and I'm damned impressed with the whole "Fediverse" thing which I wasn't even aware of a couple of weeks ago. These folks are getting hammered right now w/tens of thousands of Twitter refugees.
Plus, it’s not a TV commercial—it runs too long, no “approved this message” disclaimer, etc. it’s just a quickie online video they threw together for the hell of it, which is fine.
Oh for heaven's sake...it's not even "his latest ad;" it's actually from his first run for U.S. Senate back in 2016 (he lost in the primary that time):
🎯 The article says that they're planning on "letting government accounts keep their verified badge without paying" but:
1. They don't define what "gov't accounts" include (Institutions only, or does it include individual administrators/officials as well? Elected or appointed?)
2. Assuming it includes individuals as well as institutions, does that only include elected officials, or candidates/nominees as well?
3. Will that be limited to *federal* government accounts, or state as well? How about county level? Municipal?
4. Even if it includes ALL of these accounts, that still doesn't address the biggest problem: If the "verification badge" no longer actually indicates that the account has been verified, you'll have a bunch of gov't accounts w/badges mingled in w/a bunch of randos w/badges.
For folks confused about the distinction between Mastodon and CounterSocial: As I understand it, CS is actually a "forked" version of Mastodon's codebase which has been modified to the point that it doesn't interact with the rest of the Mastodon servers. 1/
On the one hand, CS apparently has some unique features. On the other hand, this also means that if you use it you're effectively sealed off from users on thousands of other Mastodon servers.
I have accounts set up on both, but I'm quickly leaning towards Mastodon myself.
It's important to understand that Mastodon isn't a single service per se--it's an open source software platform, more along the lines of WordPress or Drupal, which doesn't have a single person or company in charge of it:

While the final #ACA Open Enrollment deadline isn't until January 15th in most states, if you want your coverage to start on January 1st, you have to enroll earlier. Plus, Idaho's *final* deadline is in December.
Here's a table laying out the deadlines for every state. Note that some of these may be extended closer to the listed date...but don't count on that! #GetCovered sooner rather than later if possible.
