Many thanks again @SwissTPH Swiss Tropical/Public Health Institute for hosting my visit to Basel, meeting with the faculty/students and delivering 2 lectures including an especially meaningful public lecture this evening in the old city on the rise of antivaccine activism
I especially appreciated the opportunity to reconnect with @SwissTPH dynamic director and friend Prof Juerg Utzinger, discussing new opportunities for collaboration on the neglected tropical diseases #NTDs
Tomorrow and Thursday I’m in beautiful Bern, giving a career counseling workshop with the masters, doctoral and postdoctoral students on careers in global health and tropical medicine, and a vaccinology lecture..
Depressing @nytopinion from @maureendowd. My particular concern is a takeover of House/Senate could spell trouble for American biomedical science. Oppressive hearings over phony baloney GOF Covid origins conspiracies, fake news on vaccines nytimes.com/2022/11/05/opi…
And not just targeting the science, but also biomedical scientists. Pending next Tuesday’s outcome I think it’s essential that our major science orgs: @theNASEM@aaas@FASEBorg@ASMicrobiology@IDSAInfo have plans ready for how they intend to both…
…how they intend to preserve our scientific infrastructure and defend the biomedical scientists from attacks. To the academies, scientific societies, research universities and institutions, I say “this may be your moment, we look to you”
"The @VanityFair@propublica article is based heavily on Chinese-language documents that appear to have been mistranslated and misinterpreted, according to Chinese language experts who have piled on via social media since its publication" latimes.com/business/story…
"....there is no evidence that COVID escaped from the Chinese lab — none, only innuendo and claims by data crunchers with no expertise in the relevant scientific fields."
"You wouldn't know that from reading the ProPublica/Vanity Fair article. The article asserts the existence of "a bitter battle ..."
My latest @NatureRevMicro@NaturePortfolio
Global COVID vaccine equity remains aspirational. But emergence of rapidly evolving variants provides new opports to correct past policies, support local vaccine production, combat rising anti-vaccine aggression. nature.com/articles/s4157…
My latest @NatRevImmunol@NaturePortfolio
In the pandemic anti-vaccine activism in USA amplified and formed an alliance with political groups/extremists. An organized and empowered anti-science movement now threatens all childhood immunizations globally. nature.com/articles/s4157…
...and my article from 2021 in @Nature
"Halting the spread of the coronavirus will require a high-level counteroffensive against new destructive forces." nature.com/articles/d4158…
Meanwhile…as Mother Nature gets ready to serve up a 4th major coronavirus epidemic/pandemic following SARS MERS COVID19, the US Congress gets set to do all it can to dismantle our biomedical scientific infrastructure and leave our nation vulnerable statnews.com/2022/11/01/wit…
And did I forget to mention (in no special order) monkeypox, Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, measles, leishmaniasis, mal de Chagas, now emerging due to a confluence of 21st century climate change, animal and human migrations, urbanization, mega cities, poverty, deforestation, antiscience
1/n Many thanks @MelissaFox26 for hosting this AM @FOX26Houston on some exciting developments for new RSV vaccines. RSV = respiratory syncytial virus affecting both seniors and young children esp infants and premature infants. A few things…
2/n for seniors especially those with underlying COPD or congestive heart disease at risk, but now 2 potential adult vaccines might be approved soon, one from Pfizer other GSK, think of it like your 3rd respiratory illness vaccine along with flu and pneumococcal pneumonia
3/n for infants a new maternal vaccine from Pfizer given in 3rd trimester of pregnancy provider 82% protection of newborn infants in first 3 months, and still protected after 6 months. Also there’s a new monoclonal antibody given at start of RSV season showing progress
1/n Aside from the fact that it seems devoid of anything resembling science, a reason I’m concerned about the new GOP Senate report is its tone deafness to the fact that Covid is now the third major coronavirus epidemic/pandemic: SARS (2002), MERS (2012), COVID (2019)…
2/n Mother Nature is not being coy with us. She plans on hurling a new major coronavirus threat at us at least every 7-10 years. The next one is likely already jumping from bats to people or intermediate animal hosts and it’s just a matter of time before one catches fire…
3/n Unless we get serious at understanding - and at a very granular level - the bat ecology of coronaviruses and how and when they jump to gain critical mass we’ll soon experience a 4th major coronavirus epidemic/pandemic nature.com/articles/d4158…
