Many thanks again ⁦@SwissTPH⁩ Swiss Tropical/Public Health Institute for hosting my visit to Basel, meeting with the faculty/students and delivering 2 lectures including an especially meaningful public lecture this evening in the old city on the rise of antivaccine activism
I especially appreciated the opportunity to reconnect with @SwissTPH dynamic director and friend Prof Juerg Utzinger, discussing new opportunities for collaboration on the neglected tropical diseases #NTDs
Tomorrow and Thursday I’m in beautiful Bern, giving a career counseling workshop with the masters, doctoral and postdoctoral students on careers in global health and tropical medicine, and a vaccinology lecture..
Wrapping up in Geneva on Friday speaking at @WHO on our @TexasChildrens @BCM_TropMed vaccine partnerships and our efforts to combat antivaccine antiscience aggression in Texas and globally journals.plos.org/globalpubliche…

2/n for seniors especially those with underlying COPD or congestive heart disease at risk, but now 2 potential adult vaccines might be approved soon, one from Pfizer other GSK, think of it like your 3rd respiratory illness vaccine along with flu and pneumococcal pneumonia
3/n for infants a new maternal vaccine from Pfizer given in 3rd trimester of pregnancy provider 82% protection of newborn infants in first 3 months, and still protected after 6 months. Also there’s a new monoclonal antibody given at start of RSV season showing progress

1/n Aside from the fact that it seems devoid of anything resembling science, a reason I’m concerned about the new GOP Senate report is its tone deafness to the fact that Covid is now the third major coronavirus epidemic/pandemic: SARS (2002), MERS (2012), COVID (2019)…
2/n Mother Nature is not being coy with us. She plans on hurling a new major coronavirus threat at us at least every 7-10 years. The next one is likely already jumping from bats to people or intermediate animal hosts and it’s just a matter of time before one catches fire…
