🇩🇪Germany is in a hurry to secure new gas deals after🇷🇺Russia curtailed supplies and Nord Stream turned to ashes.
The Eastern Mediterranean seems a good starting point for🇩🇪and new deals have been signed with #COP27 host🇪🇬Egypt just few days ago.
But risks are behind the corner🧵 Image
🇩🇪and🇪🇬have signed an MoU just a few days before the beginning of #COP27 on LNG and🟢hydrogen cooperation.
For🇩🇪Minister Habeck, the deal "set a clear signal...to speed up the change from fossil to climate friendly energy," but yet, "🇪🇬LNG helps us to diversify🇩🇪energy imports." Image
A Joint Declaration of Intent focused on🟢H2 has been signed between🇩🇪&🇪🇬, providing:
- Technological cooperation (from🇩🇪to🇪🇬)
- Cooperation on specific projects in🟢H2
- Establishment of a🟢H2 sector
- Promotion of joint investment, research and implementation of🟢H2 projects
But clearly the deal is centred around the possibility of🇩🇪to import🇪🇬LNG
According to🇩🇪"A central point is that infrastructure projects and joint investment must be designed in a manner which enables fossil natural gas to be replaced by green hydrogen as quickly as possible"
🇪🇬Green Corridor Initiative targets 43% of⚡️power from RES by 2035.
Studies assessed that🇪🇬CO2 emissions could increase by 125% from 2012 to 2035 if the nation's energy demand is met using thermal⚡️generation technologies.
RES are necessary to decarbonise🇪🇬gas &🟢H2 production
🇪🇬has a great🌞irradiation, but🌞industry is in turmoil with equipment shortages & regulatory hurdles to delay projects or eventually scrapping them, like what happened with the West Nile🌞park.
A surplus of⚡️amid low demand & other projects already in progress determined its⛔️ Image
During #COP27🇦🇪UAE &🇪🇬announced a 10GW onshore wind farm project, one of the largest in the world, with🇦🇪state-owned renewables company Masdar.
🇪🇬and🇦🇪are close friends and they are navigating together through the🇱🇾Libya troubled waters and support Bashagha's government claims Image
🇩🇪instead recognises the 🇱🇾National Unity Government led by Dbeibeh.
However🇩🇪arms exports to🇪🇬are record-breaking (€9.35 in 2021).
Omid Nouripour, from the same🇩🇪🟢Party as🇩🇪Foreign Ministry Baerbock asked to stop arms exports to🇪🇬because of its bad human rights record Image
🇪🇬President al-Sisi is trying to convince Egyptians that🇪🇬is on the move. Enormous investments are located in the Suez Canal, weapons systems & ☢️sector. But they have little economic justification and🇪🇬is one of the most debt-ridden countries in the🌍
foreignpolicy.com/2022/08/17/egy…
In the end🇪🇬is eager to attract🇩🇪investments and technologies and bilateral relations have recently grown on the back of energy cooperation, but🇩🇪will have to outcompete other🇪🇺EU partners in the country, especially🇫🇷France and🇮🇹Italy, with a strong foothold in the🇪🇬energy sector Image
The shifting geopolitical dynamics and the critical role of gas in the🇩🇪energy system reveal the paradoxical nature of the falling interdependency with🇷🇺and the rising ones with alternative gas partners.
Is🇩🇪ready to turn a blind eye on political dissent & human right abuse in🇪🇬?
Will🇩🇪be able to rival its🇪🇺EU partners in🇫🇷Paris &🇮🇹Rome, the latter with a new government ready to forget the #GiulioRegeni case?
But most of all, where is the🇪🇺EU Commission and🇪🇺coordination in all this as PMs ply between🇪🇺and foreign capitals alone?
🧐🤔

The organization responsible for the reliability of the U.S. and Canadian power grids said on Wednesday that generation resources could be tight across a large portion of North America on the coldest days this winter.
reuters.com/business/energ…
The North American Electric Reliability Corp (NERC) said its 2022-2023 Winter Reliability Assessment warned "that a large portion of the North American bulk power system is at risk of having insufficient energy supplies during severe winter weather."
Federal regulators also warned that the New England region faced its highest energy costs in more than 25 years this winter due to tight heating oil supplies and fierce competition for LNG.
NERC said the assessment concluded that

A potent sign of Europe’s energy crisis can be found at the Marl Chemical Park in Germany’s industrial heartland of North Rhine-Westphalia. A coal-fired power plant that had been due to close by the end of 2022 will instead keep running through the winter

and beyond, to provide energy for the companies on the site — helping to maintain more than 10,000 jobs. The power plant is owned by Evonik, one of Germany’s largest speciality chemical companies, which also runs the park. Image
The coal plant had been due to be replaced by a new gas-fired power station. Fortuitously, given the current concerns over natural gas supplies, that plant had also been equipped to burn other sources of fuel, including liquefied petroleum gas or LPG

Top U.S. LNG exporter Cheniere Energy Inc (LNG.A) is asking Louisiana regulators for 18 months to upgrade nearly half of its turbines in the state because they exceeded new air pollution limits. The repairs could slow U.S. shipments to Europe.
reuters.com/business/energ…
The request reveals a potential snag at a critical LNG production facility as U.S. producers try to ramp up exports to meet booming global demand. This year, the U.S. government denied Cheniere a waiver from rules limiting emissions of possible carcinogens.
Maas Hinz, Cheniere's general manager of its Sabine Pass plant, wrote that 21 of the facility's 44 turbines had exceeded the emissions limits in preliminary tests. He asked the state for 18 months to make changes to and retest the turbines.

Today it's #Midterms2022 day and Americans will determine whether the Democrats will lose control of Congress.🗽
Such an event would weaken both Biden's energy and climate agenda, but also influence the future of the🇺🇸🇪🇺energy and gas partnership🧵 Image
35 Senate seats and all 435 House of Representatives seats are on the ballot. Republicans are favored to pick up the 5 seats they need to control the House.
The Senate, split 50-50 but controlled by Democrats, will be decided by races in Pennsylvania, Nevada, Georgia & Arizona. Image
In a split chamber outcome, Biden would be forced to use executive actions to pursue administration priorities, including the finalisation of the negotiations over the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, reduction of carbon emissions, and efforts to ease inflation. Image
