🚨A new MN trifecta. A new MI trifecta. PA House ground gained. The top #Election2022 takeaway? Our electoral work, as part of a nearly $60M investment in states this cycle, made all the difference — despite a national party that overlooks & under invests in state legislatures.🧵
Not only did we help prevent the down-ballot losses that Democrats suffered in 2020, but we also fueled new pro-democracy majorities in several key states that will play an essential role in protecting our democracy in 2024. (2/x)
These strong results in our target states show that we can, in fact, win at the state legislative level — with dollars, data, and candidates who meet voters where they are. Now, let's break down where things stand, state-by-state. (3/x)
Michigan: We helped to flip *both* chambers, and will have a trifecta in Lansing for the first time in 40 years. A huge victory for democracy ahead of the 2024 presidential election in a key swing state — and a state where we invested heavily to drive this exact outcome. (4/x)
Minnesota: We helped to flip the State Senate and defended their majority in the House, winning a trifecta in St. Paul as Gov. Tim Walz goes on to serve a second term. This represents an important bulwark against anti-democracy factions in the state. (5/x)
Notably, these wins in Minnesota will be key to preventing a rightwing attempt to steal the 2024 presidential election, and we invested in both chambers, helping defend a House majority that was under assault and win a Senate majority that most thought was impossible. (6/x)
Pennsylvania Dems have netted 10 seats so far with results quickly coming in from key seats that put flipping the House in striking distance – with 3 seats still outstanding. The House dramatically overperformed expectations in a state where we were the largest funder. (7/x)
Maine: We helped successfully defend majorities in both the House and Senate, preserving a pro-democracy trifecta with the re-election of Gov. Janet Mills. We have worked hand-in-glove with the Democratic caucus efforts in Maine to propel their successful campaigns. (8/x)
Colorado: We helped to successfully defend majorities in both the House and Senate, preserving a pro-democracy trifecta with the re-election of Gov. Jared Polis. We partnered with @DemRedistrict and made investments here down the stretch. (9/x)
North Carolina: We helped to prevent a rightwing supermajority in the General Assembly, safeguarding Gov. Roy Cooper's veto power and protecting North Carolinians from a host of extreme policies. (10/x)
Wisconsin: We helped to prevent a rightwing supermajority in the Legislature, safeguarding Gov. Tony Evers’ veto power and protecting Wisconsinites from an extreme anti-democracy agenda. (11/x)
Arizona: It is still early and there are roughly 900,000 outstanding ballots across Maricopa, Pinal and Pima counties, but we are cautiously optimistic about our positioning here. The state appears to be in play for Democrats at this time. (12/x)
Nevada: It is still too early to call, but we are keeping a close eye on updated vote counts. We anticipate that remaining mail-in ballots could lean blue, which would mean Democrats have a strong chance to defend their majorities in the House and Senate. (13/x)
To our community, who made this work possible: While we were bracing ourselves for a tough night, you showed up. These results are because of you. Today, know that your support of our work to build power in the states will improve millions of lives. (14/14)

🚨 Endorsement alert! Ending rightwing control in the Michigan legislature this November will come down to these game-changing candidates running in some of the closest races. We’re proud to introduce you to some of the candidates who are giving democracy a fighting chance. ⬇️
Joey Andrews, MI HD-38: An advocate and community organizer, @JoeyforMichigan was born and raised in Southwest Michigan’s coastal communities. He champions clean air and water, sustainable, resilient infrastructure, and good jobs for working families.
Noah Arbit, MI HD-20: Born and raised in West Bloomfield, @NoahArbit is an organizer, public servant, and community leader. He champions empowering people over special interests, good jobs, and quality, affordable healthcare for every Michigan family.
At The States Project, we’re laser focused on ending unchecked rightwing control of state legislatures. But what does that actually mean? And why should you care about state-level elections happening in states you don’t live in? 🧵(1/6)
Let’s look at Arizona as an example: the rightwing holds majorities in both chambers, and last session, they proposed a slew of unpopular, harmful policies that their Republican governor then signed into law. (2/6)
If you don’t live in AZ, you may think this doesn’t impact you. But it does. Because states under rightwing control — like AZ — are where Trump looked to help him overturn the 2020 election. He pressured state lawmakers to illegally hand him electors that he knew Biden won. (3/6)
🚨Last week, the Supreme Court announced it would take up #MoorevHarper, a case that could end our democracy as we know it. Here’s what you need to know. 1/7
Earlier this year, North Carolina’s state supreme court rejected a new congressional map drawn by the state’s rightwing-controlled state legislature. The court said the maps violated the state constitution because they were too gerrymandered. 2/7
The rightwing state lawmakers behind the maps sued, resulting in #MoorevHarper, a case that argues that state legislatures—and state legislatures alone—have complete, unchecked control over federal elections. 3/7
🚨 Endorsement alert! In Pennsylvania, new maps have put the Pennsylvania House within striking distance — 103 seats that Biden won versus 100 Trump seats. Flipping 5 seats would end rightwing control and protect 20 electoral votes. 🧵
Shifting the balance of power in the Pennsylvania House will be crucial to protecting the integrity of the presidential election in 2024. Meet the majority-making candidates who we believe can help win governing power this November. ⬇️(2/16)
Sara Agerton, PA HD-88: Having served her community as a social worker and healthcare administrator for the past 20 years, @SaraAgertonPA is ready to fight for quality, affordable healthcare, sustainable infrastructure, and good jobs for every Pennsylvanian. (3/16)
🚨 Endorsement alert! In Arizona, flipping one seat in either chamber would break unchecked rightwing control of the state legislature — giving our democracy a fighting chance. 🧵
Meet the candidates whose majority-making districts we believe will be crucial to creating new majorities in Arizona. ⬇️
Lorena Austin, AZ LD-9: An advocate & community leader who worked with local restaurants & volunteers to provide support for Indigenous communities during the pandemic, @LorenaAustin4Az champions quality, affordable healthcare, housing, and strong public education.
🚨 Endorsement alert! We know whoever wins power in the states this November will play a critical role in defending — or dismantling — democracy in America. Our mission is to help win governing power for lawmakers who will improve lives & protect our democracy. 🧵
That’s why we’re proud to introduce you to these candidates who will be on the frontlines of this fight: our first round of 2022 endorsees! Follow along over the next few days to meet these majority-making candidates.
Evidence proving Trump’s plan to steal the 2020 election ran through the states continues to pile up. In April, CNN uncovered text messages from Donald Trump Jr. naming key states held by rightwing majorities who could help overturn the election. Among them? Michigan.
