.@zach_wallace_md on mentorship with focus on @rheum_covid #ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
What are the 4 different types of mentors? Are they mutually exclusive roles?

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
⭐️Traditional mentor

This is bidirectional with mentor & mentee both getting something out of the relationship

Involves frequent, regular meetings with an agenda

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
⭐️Coach

People need additional guidance beyond traditional mentors

The coach is focused on improving a particular skill or subject

One role for coaching: periods of transition

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
⭐️Sponsor

Big for career development and expanding the mentee's role and visibility

The sponsor may take a risk but they are using their influence to build up the mentee

Examples - getting mentees invited talks, roles on ed boards

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
⭐️Connector

a matchmaker or a networker

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
How do these 4 mentor types compare?

How formal/informal, how many and how frequent are the meetings?

What are the expectations from the mentee?

How strong is the personal connection?

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
Mentorship in @rheum_covid: How do you mentor remotely, globally, and across different groups of individuals?

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
In @rheum_covid we had the 4 types of mentorship, plus more

How can what we learned from the GRA inform new mentorship models/phenotypes in the future?

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
The bidirectional learning from the involvement of patient research partners can not be overstated

There was a huge learning curve but we cannot lose sight of what we learned here @rheum_covid

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit Image
We also had international mentorship and sponsorship (#ILAR grants) and peer mentoring

Tons of connections made, and opportunities given to people who are underrepresented in medicine for advancement

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit @rheum_covid Image
My personal insight here is that I was still a fellow when I started on the @rheum_covid Steering Committee. Being given this opportunity (a form of sponsorship!) allowed me to grow in many ways & very quickly

#ACR22 #GlobalSummit
@rheum_covid I really wanted to bring in as many trainees (students, residents, fellows) on projects with @rheum_covid

Some of these projects were massive as @RichardPAConway @HsiehEvelyn @rheumed @AliDuarteMD @EBRheum know
We brought in anyone who was interested, even if no prior experience. Lots of learning on the spot. Lots of mentorship, peer coaching.

Through @rheum_covid a lot of early careers were advanced. Fellows who became faculty, residents to fellows

The EULAR e posters were tiny (bad) but speakers could zoom in and out (good)

That would have been nice for #IgniteTalks #ACR22
The sound is adequate though. EULAR issue was that the sound was poor in their (smaller) poster tour stages #ACR22 #IgniteTalk

We have learned quite quickly that a virtual ONLY poster hall mixed into a hybrid meeting doesn't work well.

Poor wifi and the crashing platform compound the problem

And if it's online ONLY, is that truly hybrid?

#ACR22
This is not a complaint thread. I am hoping we can have discussion about what works/doesn't work, and what could be done next year for #ACR23
It goes without saying that an in-person poster hall is the most requested item on the wishlist for #ACR23

Biostatician @MikeLaValley8 @BU_BMC_Rheum presents a quick overview on how to appropriately interpret results from studies #ACR22

Of course this is not an exhaustive deep dive, but covers some common errors of interpretation Image
@MikeLaValley8 @BU_BMC_Rheum First, what is your research question? What is the question you are trying to answer with t he study?

👉Does this exposure CAUSE this outcome?

#ACR22 Image
@MikeLaValley8 @BU_BMC_Rheum What are common observational study designs and what are big issues to watch out for?

These are issues that can affect the validity of their results.

There are more potential issues within these study designs that is beyond the scope of this table
