"Argument-Making in the Wild"

Today's SFI Seminar by Simon DeDeo (@LaboratoryMinds), streaming now. Follow our thread for pull quotes and slides:

First, let's divide human history into three eras, or regimes of #knowledge #production and #consumption:

• #premodern/#archaic
• #modern + #postmodern
• the #egregore (online content sharing)

• The premodern era is defined by caloric restriction.
• The modern era is characterized by a small number of sellers of #information vs. a large number of consumers (see also #HerbertSimon's remarks on the "poverty of #attention")

Does green growth foster green policies? In our new article we investigate #RenewableEnergy value chains and find that local value creation leads to higher renewable energy #policy ambition #policyfeedback
Take a look:… (1/4) Image
We analyzed how technological change affects the relationship between governments and firms; growth in manufacturing and R&D of renewables increases industries’ resources to push for ambitious policies. We also see learning effects among policy makers (2/4) Image
We find that #technology #policy #feedback effects differ based on involved value chain segments in the #wind and #solar #energy sector. Manufacturing is associated with stronger policy feedbacks than R&D. (3/4)

It’s called already knowing who everyone is & getting everyone to see who they truly are … The colors so many show, a lot of times have no idea they are putting out those true colors.
Lots of filthy mirrors in the world today, filthy to the point where even with someone looking
At themselves in the mirror, they don’t see themselves …
Much of the world as been so used to acting A certain way that it feels/looks “Normal” to them acting as so many do. Once Ones start opening their minds & eyes, they start seeing their own true colors the way God sees
Them …
They start seeing what they thought to be “normal”, was actually them walking around in this world PRE PROGRAMMED to act/live this way purposely by corruption for such A long time that they strayed so far away from the paths God has set in front of them from birth ..

"Larger circuits can be constructed out of smaller circuits in three ways.
•..‘in parallel’[:] inputs and outputs are..placed side-by-side
•[‘inseries’][:] outputs of one circuit can be fed into the inputs of the next circuit[:] the resulting circuit
>has the inputs of the first circuit and the outputs of the second
•[‘#feedback’]: some of the outputs of a circuit can be fed back as its own input.

Using these three forms of #composition, circuits of billions of elementary components can be created using a very small number>
>of basic gates; circuits that control our #computers, mobile #phones, or #car[-]engines.
And yet ,surprisingly, the semantics of such circuits is not perfectly understood, in a sense which will be made clear immediately.

#MedStudents, #Residents, #Fellows, and #Research Trainees - I recently had both a resident and fellow ask me how I got involved in research and published when I was a #trainee. I thought I would share my tips and advice in this thread. #MedTwitter #ACGME #MedStudentTwitter
1. Ask yourself👉what you want from this? To pursue research as career? To boost application for #residency #fellowship #employment? To get a recommendation letter? Regardless, aim for #publication (most value). Conference talks are cool, but publications stay on CV forever!
2. Basic science research=⬆️time+lab training vs clinical research. Study designs: RCTs, prospective, retrospective, case reports, review papers. Publishing case reports+review papers are most feasible endeavors during training! Best way to boost #publication numbers.

Bad product features-Product features that drive the agenda of the product leader and not fulfill the needs/desires of the user. They exist only for optical reasons.

Good product features- Fulfill the needs/desires of the user.

#ProdMgmt #ProductLeadership
One of needs for the users of any #foodtech app would be to not see any variance in the amount to be paid between when the food item is selected versus the amount that is paid finally.
Eliminating this 'unpleasant surprise' is more important than providing discount coupons which most of the times doesn't give the user the feeling that they are saving money in the transaction.

It rather makes the user feel that the company underestimates their intelligence.

1/ We’re excited to announce that L2 scaling is coming to Element through @aztecnetwork!

Lower gas costs have been one of the most awaited features by the Element community, and we’ve chosen Aztec as our first exploration into L2 scaling solutions.…
2/ Element transactions with Aztec will be batched into rollups that will be scheduled to run based on the relative demand per asset. This means that as demand grows, batches will run more frequently and become larger resulting in cheaper gas costs per transaction.
3/ After careful analysis, we’ve come to the conclusion that the integration with Aztec Network could bring gas savings ranging from 6x to 40x on average, depending on the specific term and asset.

Let's talk about giving and receiving #feedback

A 🧵about my experience as a peer-reviewer as well as an applicant for the #NHMRC IG scheme

As a reviewer, this is the first year of the #NHMRC IG scheme that we were allowed to give feedback

Why feedback is important? Because for the ~85% who missed out, feedback gives them at least a learning opportunity (or at least it should)

As reviewers, we know if score someone a 5 or less, the chances they will secure a highly competitive grant is significantly reduced

The minimum we can do is to provide them with outstanding feedback

As @BreneBrown says "clear is kind, unclear is unkind"

Ok some thought about the process for being verified on #Twitter and things for me that should be changed or modified. Some things are not really clear. Tell me what do you think of what i'm saying, would love to have your #feedback and don't hesitate to #RT
First, what about people that could be fit in 2 or 3 categories (I'm in this case). You have to choose only one when you do the process. What if for example if you are a journalist and an activist ?
I think the verification was here at first, to prove that it's really the person and not a fake profile. So for example the profile of the PDG of Twitter France @damienviel is not verified, so you can think it's a fake account.

1/ Receiving feedback is HARD!

It puts into tension two core human needs:
- To grow🪴 & learn🎓
- To be accepted as we are🫂

Today’s #TweetorialTuesday is going to provide tools to navigate this struggle.

Thanks for joining the @MedEdTwagTeam!
2/ This is our last thread in our #Feedback series (except for a recap next week), and we have saved the best for last.

Many argue that receiving feedback is the MOST IMPORTANT skill.

YOU are the key variable in whether feedback is internalized and applied, not your teachers.
3/ The content of this thread is derived from the work of the feedback gurus, Sheila Heen & Douglas Stone, law professors at Harvard Law School and experts in leadership, collaboration, and conflict management.

Both their book and this paper are definitely worth your time.

Re-upping the latest excellent #feedback thread from @GStetsonMD @MedEdTwagTeam, and emphasizing this point- someone is not a 'struggling trainee' or, even worse, 'the difficult trainee'. 🤨
#MedEd #SurgEd
A trainee not meeting expectations reflects on the unit as much as the trainee. Our local saying is 'not a trainee to fail until they are a *properly supported* trainee to fail'. Importantly, this does not mean the support provided to the last successful trainee is sufficient.2/6
Recall the difference between equality and equity. Teaching cannot be 'one size fits all'. Teaching must be tailored to prior knowledge, learning opportunities, learning goals, preferred ways of communicating, and much more*. 3/6

1/ All teachers will have learners who aren’t meeting expectations.

Providing feedback in these situations can be tough, but is VITALLY important.

Hang with us, the #MedEdTwagTeam, and we will walk you through it on today’s #TweetorialTuesday!
2/ Today, we will discuss the “struggling learner”, a terrible phrase that shouldn’t be used.

From now on, we will be discussing the learner who isn’t meeting expectations (LWIME). This doesn’t label, and describes their current behaviors, not their potential.
3/ Can we define LWIME? Per @JenniferSpicer4 & @gradydoctor, you need a measuring stick to say whether a learner is, or is not, meeting expectations.

Great tools are the #ACGME Core Competencies or #CanMEDS Framework. You can further break this down by specialty #milestones.
