Today I honour the veterans who fought empires of hate to save peace and democracy. I worry their sacrifice will be in vain if we don’t continue their work.
Foot soldiers of the enemy have returned to weaken the bonds between friends, family and neighbours one conspiracy at a time.
When we’re overwhelmed and exhausted we are more vulnerable. We can more easily be convinced to rally against others rather than respectfully work through our differences.
We gravitate to one side of the argument and see each other less and less…as people. We want to be right more than we want to remain friends.
Make no mistake: in doing this we do our enemies’ work. We become the blade that cuts the ties that bind.
And that is their goal: to encourage us to forget our common values and dismantle our society from within.
We may not all realize it but we are in the thick of battle and many are lost in the fog of war. Our adversaries are masters of disinformation and you’ve likely noticed friends and loved ones fall victim to their well-crafted lies.
So disarm the enemy! Unplug the amplifiers of disinformation! Demand civil discourse from your politicians. Our country and our future depend on it!
If the veterans who laid down their lives for us could speak, I believe they would call on us today. They would tell us it is time. Time to stand up against those trying to undo the peace, freedom and privileges for which they died.
