This stmt historically precedes a 🇨🇳 missile test into #SouthChinaSea
3/ Spokesperson for the ASEAN Summit, Kung Phoak, stated that unlike in previous years, the #SouthChinaSea dispute is no longer a hot topic for ASEAN leaders to discuss at the Summit.
4/ I suppose this being the 10th anniversary of the 2012 ASEAN Summit chaired by 🇰🇭 which had no joint communique due the #SouthChinaSea issues, this statement is techtonic progress.
Look fwd to see an "integrated" Plan of Action for US #MaritimeCooperation, not just a list of sporadic activities by different departments & agencies.
"And I want to thank the Prime Minister of — for Colombia’s [Cambodia’s] leadership in the ASEAN — as ASEAN chair and for hosting all of us."
🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
"..promote cooperation and coordination among our relevant agencies, including maritime law enforcement agencies, to collaborate to improve maritime domain awareness.."
16/ #EastAsiaSummit:
"...Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness, through which 🇺🇸🇦🇺🇯🇵🇮🇳, are helping ASEAN nations and other Indo-Pacific partners to undertake marine conservation, counter illegal fishing, and respond to humanitarian disasters."
➡️"They commit to addressing key issues of concern for the Pacific Islands... including #IUUFishing ...including through the Partners in the Blue Pacific"
"emphasized the importance of the new Partners in the Blue Pacific to help address challenges in the Pacific...and to bolster maritime domain security"
2/ "In foreign policy, 🇨🇳’s leaders chose to preserve close ties with 🇷🇺even after the country’s unprovoked invasion of 🇺🇦, increased the brazenness of 🇨🇳’s confrontations in the #SouthChinaSea and around 🇹🇼, and made more aggressive pushes for overseas basing options"
3/ "China’s aggressive activities in the #SouthChinaSea led to dangerous encounters between Chinese and other countries’ ships and aircraft in the region."
2/ My first favorite quote:
"Campaigning requires discipline...In service of strategic prioritization, we will focus day-to-day force employment on a more narrow set of tasks than we do currently."
➡️Look fwd to see how this is implemented, esp by the Navy in the IndoPacific.
3/ "Working with Allies and partners, we will build and exercise force elements needed in crisis or conflict, such as infrastructure, logistics, command and control, dispersal and relocation, and mobilization."
➡️This means #SEALIFT @mercoglianos@johnkonrad@zach_ota
"Our National Defense Strategy relies on integrated deterrence: the seamless combination of capabilities to convince potential adversaries that the costs of their hostile activities outweigh their benefits."
3/ On #IndoPacific:
"We have entered a consequential new period of American foreign policy that will demand more of the United States in the Indo-Pacific than has been asked of us since the Second World War."
