Following my Top 10k finish in the EURO Fantasy game, I take a deep dive into strategies to help you succeed in a new game…
This game isn’t the same as FPL, so in order to be successful please don’t approach it as so.
There’s different rules and nuances with the point scoring system. For those who play FanTeam, it’s far more similar to that – a game where aggression is rewarded more than…
FPL (whilst being more hit adverse).
🏆 Chip Strategies
Wildcard:
You are effectively given a Wildcard prior to the commencement of the round of 16 and of course have unlimited transfers to start with.
So the question that arises is which side of the knockout stages is it more beneficial to use the…
chip, before or after?
Below are a few strategies and my preferred one as things stand:
Wildcarding post-round of 16:
I’m going to make the assumption that with a combination of your own research and footballing knowledge, plus a few upsets in the round of 16, come the…
quarter-finals a squad will on average have nine players out of 15 available.
Before the start of the quarter-finals, you are allocated four free transfers. This means you will have a squad of 13 available to you.
As such, I see very little comparative upside to targeting…
the fixtures compared to times prior.
The argument for holding the Wildcard to the semi-finals is a fairly weak one as well. This time you are gifted five free transfers prior to the commencement of the round.
Again, making a few more assumptions:
1. Your squad of 13 gets chopped down to eight following one upset out of the four games – a fair probability given historical events.
2. Out of the eight players you have remaining, at least five of them are from two of the favourites to advance to the final.
3. And with the additional five transfers, the squad is strengthened to such an extent that the Wildcard’s comparative advantage to using it earlier is small.
You do not want to be taking any hits in this competition, it shouldn’t be necessary.
Further, without bonus points it’s significantly harder to make gains on hits.
The risk-to-reward ratio increases massively in the favour of the former.
Wildcarding pre-round of 16:
I prefer this much more. The early stages of the competition are by far the most important.
In a game with so many viable assets and combinations, the ability to pick up a huge relative gain at the start is very present.
That is why I say to…
attack the earlier matchdays, where the opportunities are even larger.
The only question that remains is; do you Wildcard in Matchday 2 or 3?
I’d say Matchday 2 is where most of the top teams in their respective groups meet.
As such, I prefer the aggressive strategy of…
picking which of the top teams you think will do well and picking them in bulk, rather than sitting on the fence and splitting your side to cover multiple scenarios.
For those who play shorter format fantasy games, it’s always very apparent the aggressive strategy is the best.
The extent of the upside outweighs that of the downside.
Doubling down on France against Denmark and Uruguay (my dark horse selection) against Portugal is exactly what I’m alluding to.
Rather than having Nunez and Ronaldo because they both had good Matchday 1 fixtures.
So you have a choice. I prefer this route it allows you to get…
two matchdays of utility out of the Wildcard, rather than just one.
Secondly, relatively speaking, enough information should be available to you by the conclusion of Matchday 1 to make informed decisions.
Short tournaments are primarily form based.
12th Man:
The rules on the 12th Man booster state: “Will allow you to select one additional player to score points for your team in a matchday.
“When selected, the 12th man cannot be substituted, captained or transferred. You can select any player to be your 12th man and…
budget or team restrictions do not count here”.
This booster has the least strategy behind it from my perspective.
Essentially you won’t choose one of your best players but rather someone in the category below with a high ceiling but slightly inconsistent.
This will be played around the other two boosters rather than dictating a time.
I’m currently looking to play it in Matchday 2/3 (the week I don’t Wildcard), simply because in the knockout stages my squad will be somewhat depleted compared to the group stage.
Substitutions are therefore more impactful in the group stage, which has a direct correlation with this booster.
Playing it in the round of 16 is a strategy I quite like as well but not later.
Power Captain:
The Power Captain chips allows you to ‘get double points from…
whichever player scores the most points from your 15 man squad’.
This player will automatically be assigned the captaincy.
The more players available to you, the less likely you are of picking the best captaincy option out of them.
So from that perspective, Matchday 1 where…
you have the smallest amount of information you will at any point in the tournament and many good teams have good fixtures, it makes a lot of sense to play it then.
The only other strategy I like is playing it in the quarter or semi-finals if you think there’s aplayer who’s…
capable of hauling while being the underdog.
This will however have to be premeditated and leaves things more to chance.
🏆 Points System
Again, this is completely different from FPL.
The points scored for scoring a goal whether the player is a midfielder or forward is now the same (five) and a clean sheet is worth an equal amount.
Given the pricing of players – forwards are certainly more expensive – there will certainly be a lot of value of the midfielders category.
Defenders receive seven points for scoring a goal. This naturally encourages you to spend at least a decent proportion of your budget…
on traditionally attacking defenders.
Full-backs who play in a system in which they are integral to their team’s attack, like Denzel Dumfries and centre-back’s who are prolific in the air – such as Thiago Silva – could be ones to target
🏆 Substitutions Strategy:
Given the nature of substitutions, it certainly warrants the argument of having stronger fringe players.
The ability to replace assets who have played earlier in the matchday is a big advantage.
A strategy which will likely go under the radar is…
picking your squad with the days they play on in mind.
For example, if all of your players are playing on day 1 and 2 of that matchday, it makes the substitutions element less effective for yourself.
You have more decisions to make as to which players to substitute in or…
completely leave on the bench.
However, having players who play on day 1,2,3 and 4 allows the best decision to be made for you automatically given you will know more outcomes with players still left to play.
This isn’t to say sacrifice the best players in the game simply…
because of the day they play on, but it’s certainly something to keep in mind and certainly a strategy that will benefit you if implemented correctly.
🏆 Important note:
I’d like to reiterate again that this isn’t FPL.
Playing with a slightly more conservative style in a shorter format game like this, with a different rule set, almost guarantees your chances of achieving an excellent rank as zero.
Capitalise on the unique opportunities at the start.
