It's been a week since the Curation Team was disbanded – and since then I've seen foolish theories about our work.

I was a Curation Regional Lead and here's a necessary thread to understand what we used to do, how we impacted product and why our departure is a loss for Twitter🧵
🤔What did Curation do?

We're responsible for highlighting & contextualizing the most relevant stories that unfold on Twitter. Our work made it easy for customers to experience only-on-Twitter convos and get the most out of the platform, regardless of which accounts they follow.
🦾How did Curation do it?

- Adding context to Trends to explain why it was trending
- Creating Moments by hand-picking Tweets to provide deeper context
- Creating live Moments to reflect ongoing stories
- Creating followable Topics to help users find what’s most relevant to them
🔎Where was our work seen?

Curated content was offered to users on the Explore tab, Audio tab, Home Timeline, Trending Topics, Search Results, Push Notifications, Prompts, Tweet labels, and third-party product integrations.
🌎What markets did Curation serve?

We served 18 markets in 7 languages, 24/7.

- English: 🇺🇲🇨🇦🇬🇧🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇺🇳🇿🇳🇬🇬🇭
- Spanish: 🇲🇽🇺🇲🇪🇸🇦🇷🇨🇴
- Tamil & Hindi: 🇮🇳
- Arabic: 🇸🇦🇪🇬🇦🇪
- Portuguese: 🇧🇷
- Japanese: 🇯🇵
💥What was Curation's impact according to surveys?

- Trend description helped users understand why a trend was trending (85%) and made using Trends a better experience (82%)

- Moments improved user experience (73%) and made it easier to understand a news story on Twitter (61%)
👀Did Curation decide what trends on Twitter?

No, absolutely not! Trends are determined by an algorithm that identifies topics that are popular now on Twitter. Curation's mission was to manually monitor those Trends and work to add context to explain why they were trending.
📰What convos did Curation prioritize?

Civic processes & breaking news as these are the ones that most require deep context to understand why they are trending and most of their primary sources are on Twitter. Curation played a key role to protect the integrity of those convos.
⚖️What did Curation do to prevent bias?

We followed high standards of accuracy, impartiality & fairness that were public. An external group of advisors helped hold us accountable to our mission by recommending best practices & policies necessary to continually improve our work.
Here you can read the Curation guidelines and principles.

🛡️How did Curation handle disinformation?

By showing credible, authoritative information about misleading narratives before users encounter it, so they're better equipped to resist it. We also reacted to conversation based on false information by elevating fact-checking content.
🙋What else did we do?

- support product develop
- improve reco engines
- detect spam
- identify high-quality content
- spot bad actors
- prospect new markets
- evaluate AI models
- anticipate trends
- explain user behavior
- plan events
- promote broadcasts from the scene
- etc
Btw, this beautiful thread by @evnhsn is a great summary of how Curation has impacted Twitter as a product over the past years.
⏩What's next?

For Twitter, idk, but wish the best

For Curators, the future is bright. We're pioneers in curation within social media industry, and have product knowledge, HITL expertise & tech experience that is (still) rare out there. We built something amazing from scratch💪
I end my thread with another thread, this one Tweeted by @JoannaG, Curation Director. Here she talks more about our team and its mission.
Lastly, just wanted to say that it was a pleasure to serve the public conversation for 7 years. I'm VERY proud of what Curation has built. I'm proud from the bottom of my heart! 💙
