1. #AlexandriaWest planning process under way. There will be no advisory group, so in addition to participating in the outreach process, I will be making some points here.
2. This neighborhood already has a fair amount of housing, but it fails to be leverage that for walkability, because it was built when retail and housing were largely kept separate. It is essential that we focus on mixed use, incorporating retail and service throughout
3. in order to make walkable access more feasible. In addition we need improved pedestrian and bike infra to enable such access. That will include SUPs on Beauregard and King, and good ped access through any Seminary oval.
4. We must focus on as good a West End Transitway as possible (with a connection to DSIM and EnvisionRte7 as well) Transit will support density and density will leverage transit.
5. There are big concerns in the community about displacement and housing affordability. While that should be addressed with committed AH, we should not forget that new market rate housing adds to affordability and that failing to densify does not assure that market rate AH
6. survives. So we need to be balanced and pragmatic in our committed AH asks for development. Altogether we should use new housing and new connectivity to create a vibrant and sustainable community #alexandriava

1/ 'Among the SHA’s chief complaints were that the “before” period of traffic measurement was prior to the pandemic' How exactly was TES supposed to do a before period that was NOT before the pandemic?
2/'and the “after” period was during a time when most people were still working from home and traveling less.' So they wanted the analysis to wait? Okay, but the review was mandated by Council. Of course it can be reviewed again whn the pandemic is over. When will that be?
3/'In addition, Douglas MacArthur Elementary School was demolished and is being rebuilt – those students are attending school next to Patrick Henry School on Taney Avenue.' But during the debate in 2019 they said that would make traffic WORSE, not better.
Both current and potential riders are heavily low and moderate income – improved transit for them would improve equity
A significant number of lower income residents of Alexandria do not own cars. Many more low and moderate income residents are car lite, owning only one car in a multi adult household. They rely on buses to get to work, shopping and errands.
Making it easier and more convenient for them to do so would improve the lives of the less privileged of our fellow Alexandrians.
