For those who have been following the story about the torture of autistic people at the Judge Rotenberg Center: ABAI members just voted AGAINST Contingent Electric Skin Shock, and that is now therefore the official ABAI position!
This step forward is a victory for disability rights activists!

What happens next to #StopTheShock? We don't know yet. There are laws before Congress at the moment, but that is a separate process.

This news via @NeuroClastic, one of the main lobbyists against the torture.
And here's more about how the torture house threatened @NeuroClastic, one of the groups which spoke out strongly against the torture.
This step forward would not have happened without years of external pressure from organisations such as @autselfadvocacy, @NationalADAPT and @NeuroClastic, individual activists like @autistichoya incl. survivor-activists like @JenniferMsumba, who spoke out about the abuse.
The ABAI position statement is just one step.

Ban the torture now.

Two of my close relatives just had COVID-19 for a few days last week, and are now pretty much recovered, they believe.

THEY ARE BOTH GENETICALLY AT HIGH RISK FOR HORRIBLE EFFECTS MONTHS DOWN THE LINE.

They wore masks in April when they visited us merely because I insisted.
I am annoyed that I have to stay up to date with the latest on Long Covid testing and treatment because you can't just go to any doctor to get it if you happen to need it.
Oh, and... one of the people I know who has Long Covid (actual diagnosis too, thanks to my urging) goes about without a mask. His brain doesn't work so lekker anymore. I kept having to remind him not to exercise. Like, I reminded him three times a day, because he'd not compute.

Anyone else planning to unfollow everyone who buys themselves a blue tick?
I searched. Yep, it's a thing. And one person even made a hashtag for it.

[THREAD] I'm looking for advice and action for a chronically ill wheelchair user in Greater Seattle (currently without a caregiver, but in need of one—they're in short supply).

I'm NOT asking for money. I just need people in US to reach out, because I don't know your systems.
They can see replies to this thread.

I'm posting their requests with permission:

“Would someone please research patient dumping and continuity of care laws in USA and Washington State? I need to arm myself, but I'm very vulnerable to overwhelm right now.”

There's more:
“I should be [an in-patient] for observation given the recently worsened symptoms of my chronic pneumonia, but there's simply aren't beds for people who aren't imminently dying right now.”

"Suicidally frustrated" seems to be one that's accurate for me at times— but it is not an expression that most people understand.

As soon as they hear "suicidal", they think
1. you're depressed, and
2. they must tell you that you're needed.

Neither of those are true for me.
I've actually blocked people for saying "Don't go, we need you," because that's a REALLY triggering expression for me when I am frustrated that people rely on me like this.
And then I have a friend who gets REALLY depressed about the meaningless of his existence combined with how awful and selfish most people are on the planet; but there's no psychologist or psychiatrist around here who understands EXISTENTIAL depression.

The problem with many of the dialogues between people in #BehaviorAnalyst roles, and autistic people and their allies who support the #BanABA movement, is that there's a misalignment of goals.
Some of us don't want to talk to ABA people at all.

But those who are prepared to do so are doing it with the purpose of getting you to give up your ABA-based job and to shut down your whole industry.
We're prepared to help you work towards alternative revenue streams, but for many of you, having a different job to go to isn't your main concern; you believe in ABA and you're determined to make ABA work.

I cannot imagine people in my country coming up with such a law. There's a niqab boutique less than 10 minutes from my home. Photo of women in various niqab outfits on a beach in Cape T
Most local Muslimahs are hijabis, not niqabis, and there are some who don't wear hijab either. I can't imagine our government wanting to stick its nose in there to decide who should wear what in public.
