@jgasspoore@jeremycaplan@newmarkjschool Now we have a panel discussion: Cultivating Community Scribes in South Jersey: Community engagement magic: That’s what happens when a community foundation, a humanities nonprofit, and a journalism program come together to explore the local news scene in South Jersey!
Speaking will be: Valerie Popp, Director of Strategic Initiatives, NJ Council for the Humanities (@njhumanities); Debbie Esposito (@Debbie_Esposito), NJCH Community Scribe, Winslow Township (1/2)
They worked on their spring 2022 Democracy and the Informed Citizen community scribe program, which trained over 15 community members from Downe, Hammonton, Salem, Willingboro, Winslow, and Woodbury in the basics of citizen-driven journalism.
State humanities councils were chosen for this type of work because they really understand their states, and the things that go on. The NJ Council of the Humanities has been working in the state for decades, for example.
The Center for Cooperative Media (that's us!) is a supporter of this program. #LNS22
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program had to be revamped.
The curriculum for this program was based on a curriculum done at CCP in Philadelphia.
Community scribes: What's news to you?
The NJ Civic Information Consortium (@NJCivicInfo) has given the program a grant to continue their work locally in New Jersey. This new part of the program was suggested by one of the program participants.
Here’s the curriculum we open-sourced from the initial certificate program we launched with the Community College of Philadelphia that was the foundation for the Community Scribes workshops: docs.google.com/document/d/1hs…

Today is #GivingTuesday and we know you're probably buried up to your eyes in fundraising emails, but there are only a handful of non-profit newsrooms in New Jersey and we wanted to make sure you know how important it is to support them as well.
Here's a list of them!
There's @aboutbloomfield in Essex County, a community news service dedicated to making Bloomfield more informed, engaged, and resilient.
There's @Chalkbeat in Newark, with its reporters working around the clock to answer urgent questions facing NJ educators, families, school boards, and residents.
Today we're announcing the NJ Media Mentors program, an idea from the mind of @gunnysvg to pair volunteers with local news leaders looking for mentorship.
Have insight to share? We want to connect you with people who need it the most!
Especially over the last 10 years, a lot of people who spent decades working for news organizations have left their jobs. They’ve been bought out, retired or got tired of the turmoil in the media industry.
Many of those people have a wealth of knowledge about all aspects of the business: Some worked as editors, some were talented reporters, others are incredible copy editors, advertising sales managers and more.
Fellows have been publishing stories over the last several months as part of #NJMediaCounts, a program managed by @10thprecinct, aimed at supporting ethnic and community news outlets in New Jersey covering the #2020Census in their communities.
(Almost all of these events are FREE, by the way. 🤗)
Aug. 13: Join @krystalknapp p of @PlanetPrinceton for a free @WordPress webinar on Gutenberg basics, which plugins to use to make your posts and pages stand out, and a discussion about the future of Gutenberg.
