Twitter fam, thank you for helping me to find the family of the 9 year old girl from NJ who had the police called on her by her neighbor for collecting lantern flies. I connected with them & invited them to @yale for a Black girl led Science Tour! Yesterday—HISTORY was MADE (1/)
First, we stopped at @thesashlab (not as fun BUT we had lots of Yale swag and goodies courtesy of @yalesph and @yalemeddei (2/)
Then we went over to Dr. Bei’s lab at @YaleEMD where PhD student, @ifedesamours showed us live mosquitoes! (3/)
We then went to Science Hill to Horsley’s lab where Dr. @Kris__95 gave us a private tour and showed us how she studies diabetes in mice… and surprisingly this was Bobbi’s favorite part of the tour!, she even named the mouse, Bob 🥰 (4/)
Then we ended the day at Yale Entomology…and they promised the family that if Bobbi collects more lanternflies, she can contribute them to Yale and they guarantee that Bobbi's name will always be attributed to the lantern flies she collects! (5/)
ANYONE USING THE LANTERN FLY SPECIMENS THAT SHE COLLECTS & CONTRIBUTES TO YALE ENTOMOLOGY WILL HAVE TO CREDIT HER! COME ON BLACK GIRL MAGIC! (6/)
Bobbi & her sister inherited a crew of Yale Aunties who will love on her and her family forever! Special thanks to @AileenIlianaPhD@lukieash18@YaleBPA for quickly mobilizing to help make her visit to @yale so special! (7/)
I want to specifically thank Bobbi's mom @MoniqueAJoseph, her sister Hayden, and their dad for being so brave in standing up for justice for Bobbi. These past few weeks have not been easy for the family but their resilience and strength is truly inspiring

My older brother is autistic and needs assistance/supervision using public bathrooms. I took him to my cousins church one day and brought him into the womens bathroom.
A thread on why I am a supporter of gender neutral bathrooms (1)
I figured women would be more understanding if I told them that my brother was autistic as we were walking into the bathroom. He was holding my hand, so I felt that he wouldn’t be seen as a threat (2)
As we walked into the bathroom, women started screaming, and one of them immediately ran out to tell security that there was a man in the bathroom (3)
I’ve been warned by people on the danger of sharing your aims or unfunded project ideas to others at conferences, talks, or meetings unless it’s published or funded. I used to think it was so strange that people were this scared, until it happened to me and others I know (2)
I remember sharing my aims for a grant that I wanted to apply for. I developed these aims in 2019 and shopped them around to a bunch of folks including POs for feedback and suggestions (3)
Let’s talk about tone policing Black girls and women. In short, don’t do it. But here is a thread on it.
Yes, even I get tone-policed. But I recognize it immediately and put an end to it. Leaving the perpetrator with references to self-reflect on their actions towards me. I do this as a way to protect other Black females from going through this.
Tone policing has everything to do with the receiver. You perceive this person’s email, text, verbal exchange with you, or non-verbal cues to be “threatening”, “aggressive”, or “mean” based on your own preconceived thoughts and negative views of them.
A close acquaintance of mine died from COVID on Sunday. What saddens me about her death is that she was offered the vaccine but refused because she wanted to see how others reacted.
While I don’t blame her for being hesitant, a part of me wishes I could have talked to her about her hesitancy. Maybe she would still be here.
For all those who are hesitant to get the vaccine, I understand because I was hesitant too. But I trust our scientists and know that this vaccine is here to really protect us and not harm us. Covid is not a game and is nothing to play with
