🧵All COPs are disappointing; they never do enough to slow warming to keep the planet and its people safe. Year after year, COPs show the power of the fossil fuel industry and its cruel indifference to the planetary suffering it is causing & the climate chaos it will soon unleash
But if you look hard enough, it’s possible to see several positive outcomes from #COP27 . This COP made important progress on several key fronts, inc holding the line on 1.5°C & noting tipping points incl in the cryosphere. linkedin.com/pulse/positive…
#COP27 also made progress on #methane, mostly outside the COP: 150 countries plus the EU are now part of the #GlobalMethanePledge, including vulnerable islands & other states
Now it's time for a global methane agreement, inspired by the #MontrealProtocol, which is a sectoral agreement that will have avoided 2.5°C of warming by the end of century.
#Methane is ripe for another sectoral agreement, starting with the fossil fuel sector, then waste. Agriculture will require separate treatment; farmers are already suffering from climate #COP27
Climate financing also advanced at #COP27 , following the Bridgetown Initiative of Barbados Prime Minister @miaamormottley; This could be opened for business at the Spring meeting of the IMF & World Bank.
The historic loss & damage fund will have an immediate impact as it darkens the shadow of liability and reaches boardrooms around the world #COP27
The youth movement continues rocking, and the children of light are on the march against the children of darkness. Along with Island States, they deserve much credit for keeping the 1.5°C target alive and for loss & damage #COP27
