Holy cow, that Kaoru Mori / Bride’s Story at @kyotomm is everything i could have wanted and more. Gorgeous original art and bilingual Japanese *and* ENGLISH descriptions & artist commentary. kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
Here’s a detail from A Bride’s Story cover art for vol 11 - i didnt notice the care and detail in the background paintings until i saw them like this: kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
The Kaoru Mori / Bride’s Story exhibit at @kyotomm starts with a gallery of #manga cover art paintings with her commentary - “i wanted to create something with a sense of movement that would be eye-catching at a glance”
In this cover illustration painting for A Bride’s Story vol 3, Kaoru Mori describes how she tried to layer gouache to create a textured embroidery effect on the costume. As seen at @kyotommkyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
In the Kaoru Mori exhibit at @kyotomm, there’s sections devoted to each of the “brides” - Amir, Pariya, Laila and Leili, and Anis kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata… - amazing to see so many hand-drawn #maga pages up close
Also very cool to see Kaoru Mori’s rough storyboard / page sketches —> inked pages snd final typeset story pages, at @kyotomm A Bride’s Story #manga exhibit today
This sketch to finished page comparison from A Bride’s Story was pretty striking too. As seen at @kyotomm today - kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
There was also a display of costumes from Uzbekistan, Kazhakstan and Turkmenistan that inspired the world depicted in A Bride’s Story by Kaoru Mori. As seen at @kyotomm today - kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
Love this advice from Kaoru Mori to “your younger self when you first started drawing #manga,” from the Bride’s Story exhibit at @kyotomm - kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
If you go to the Bride’s Story exhibit at @kyotomm and buy your ticket online, you’ll get a Bride’s Story zipper pouch, 2 character buttons & 1 of 5 different reproductions of #manga pencil sketch pages. kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
No photos allowed in the gift shop, but i did buy a bunch of Bride’s Story stuff — including 3 reproduction #manga pages and a plate kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
Also from the Kyoto Manga Museum gift shop, I bought these 2 amazing (and kinda heavy) china platters featuring art from classic shojo #manga series, Glass Mask. I woulda got more “mangazara” - but they’re heavy & fragile-ish… :-/
No exaggeration - @yenpress’ hardcover editions of A Bride’s Story (R, in 1st photo) are pretty much the nicest version in print. As seen at @kyotomm today kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
One last batch of pics from the Kaoru Mori / Bride’s Story exhibit at Kyoto #Manga Museum @kyotomm - her drawing tools, some pencil sketches she did at her live demo & this page of a bazaar scene - see this if you can! It’s up thru Dec 26, 2022 kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

Also at the @kyotomm is the Maeda coffee shop, which has an all-star array of sketches by #manga creators on the walls. Fun playing “guess the manga creator” here. let’s see how many we can identify…
I see Tetsuya Chiba (Ashita no Joe), Yoshiyuki Tomino and Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (Mobile Suit Gundam) and maybe Go Nagai (Devilman) ?
On this wall… Keiko Takemiya (To Terra), Monkey Punch (Lupin III), Kenshi Hirokane (Kosaku Shima), Naoki Urasawa (20th Century Boys), Takao Saito (Golgo 13) and…?
A neat part of eating at Kyoto Gyukatsu was the option to sear your meat at individual table grills. #osakagyukatsu-kyotokatsugyu.com
If you're curious about traveling to Japan, go watch Pali Kaaihue's DokoGa TV segments that he produces with @NSTHAWAII: nonstophawaii.com/videos/dokogat… Some of my most amazing Japan dining experiences in Hokkaido were on a trip I took there with Pali and @Melissa808 a few years ago.
Cracked open this manga I found at the Tezuka Museum about the “untold story about how Tezuka created Blackjack, and it’s incredible. Full of stories from his former assistants and peers, about how he was sometimes kind and other times demanding and difficult to work with.
There’s this scene where Go Nagai (Devilman) recalls going to San Diego Comic-Con with Tezuka, going to see The Shining, then later seeing him back at the room, pounding out manga pages.
Then later, Go Nagai remembers being on a long flight with Tezuka, the cabin is dark, everyone is sleeping, and Tezuka is still inking in #manga pages madly
@NY_Comic_Con@webtoon@tapas_app@yenpress@izepress The "What's Next for Webtoons" panel will cover trends in webtoon publishing -- what makes it different from manga & comics publishing in N. America + opportunities & challenges of its mobile-first ecosystem for readers, content creators & publishers bit.ly/NYCCWebtoonRT
I’ve been writing about manga publishing biz for a while, but webtoon publishing in N. America is something i’ve been curious about lately. Content & readership-wise, it overlaps with manga while being distinctly different in its business model and its mobile-first approach
Other categories for our "This Manga is Awesome!" picks for @NY_Comic_Con will include:
"I'm tired of this [manga genre/trope] but this one is actually pretty good"
"Long but worth it manga series"
"Manga my mom/dad would like"
"I'm shocked this was licensed in English"
AND MORE
Oh man. I filled 2 shopping bags of manga to give away at the “This Manga is Awesome!” panel at NYCC on friday and i havent made a dent in my hallway piles.
Here’s the hallway with what’s still there… it doesnt look like 2 shopping bags of books were removed… 🫣 most of it is stuff i want to keep / series I’m currently reading that cant fit in my library room now
What’s in the giveaway pile for “this manga is awesome!” at NYCC? Well… it really is a mixed bag. There’s stuff with anime tie-ins, some shojo, some shonen, some BL, some manga in Japanese & French… plus maybe a few “adult” titles still wrapped in plastic.
