#FOOTBALL IS MEDICINE ⚽️🏃🏽 A biopsychosocial therapy

The idea that football can be used as therapy and as a high-intensity and literally breath-taking training regime goes back centuries. To take one prominent example, the French philosopher
Voltaire describes in the Book of Fate (1747), how a patient is cured by playing with a sacred football: “…You must kick this Bladder, Sir, once a Day about your Hall for a whole Hour together, with all the Vigour and Activity you possibly can”,
“Ogul, upon making the first Experiment, was ready to expire for want of Breath”, “In short, our Doctor in about 8 days Time, performed an absolute Cure. His Patient was as brisk, active and gay, as One in the Bloom of his Youth.”

From Shakespeare to Shankly, football has been a focus of debate, and it will no doubt continue to be so.

If, therefore, we draw on Voltaire and extend the quote of Albert Camus, who outlined something slightly different during his interview in the 1950s
– ‘What little I know on morality, I learned it on football pitches and theater stages. Those were my true universities’. We propose that football can serve as a medical tool.
⚽️Cardiovascular, metabolic and musculoskeletal training components of recreational football training > induced adaptations in fitness and health variables > prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of non-communicable diseases
> describes the psychosocial elements of acute recreational football training as well as the long-term psychosocial training-induced effects and the possibility of creating adherence to an active lifestyle

✅ Football as Medicine against cardiovascular disease

👉Exercise may be a significant part of the treatment protocol: cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure and intermittent claudication.
👉 Positive effects
_ increases in left-ventricular posterior-wall thickness and right-ventricular systolic function
-training achieved a reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels.
✅ Football as Medicine against type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- A 1% absolute lowering of HbA1c is associated with a 15–20% reduction in major cardiovascular
✔️football involves many strength-demanding activities, such as sprints, shots and sudden changes of direction
✔️GLUT-4 ⬆️in a group of sedentary middle-aged women after 15 weeks of football training 3 times per week
✔️ ~1 kg increase in lean body mass after 12–16 weeks of treatment
✔️football training 2–3 times weekly increases VO 2 max by about 25% in only 12 weeks
✅ Football for promotion of bone health across the lifespan

º According to the potential to augment bone mass and geometry during growth, exercises can be categorised as osteogenic (weight-bearing and high-intense exercise) or nonosteogenic
➡️The positive effects
⁃Osteocalcin👉 as bone turnover markers
⁃N-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen (P1NP)👉 as bone formation markers
⁃C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX)👉 as a bone resorption marker.
✅ Football as rehabilitation for cancer patients
- is beneficial for ca. patients and cancer survivors, and may improve both physical function and quality of life. contributing to the social bonding of the team, resulting in everyone feeling included and well cared for
✅ Football and healthy ageing

✔️Lifelong football training effects on the expression of molecular markers associated with healthy ageing in skeletal muscle > induces upregulation of key markers involved in the mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative metabolism pathways
(AMPKα1/α2, PGC1 α, NAMPT, TFAM and citrate synthase activity) and in DNA repair promotion and senescence suppression (ERK1/2, AKT, mTOR and FoxM1).

TIGHT JUNCTIONS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE FUNCTION OF THE INTESTINAL BARRIER.

✅They are composed of different binding molecules, such as claudin and occludin, and regulate the paracellular permeability of water, ions and macromolecules in adjacent cells
👉One of their most important functions is to provide a physical barrier to luminal inflammatory molecules 👉 deterioration of barrier integrity and structure 👉 activates immune cells and produces chronic inflammation in different tissues.
The intestinal barrier system depends on interactions between several components: mucosal gel-adhesive layer, immunoglobulin A, antibacterial peptides, and intercellular tight junctions.
