I tweeted this last night & wanted to explain how Maguire’s style of play (right foot) affected #Eng build ups.

I will go into more detail, but - in 1 tweet - Maguire doesn’t want to get trapped on his left, so he drops deep (more time to cut inside) which forces #eng deep. Image
Stones has the ball in this example. A square (ish) pass to Maguire & he can pass to Shaw before USA shuffle across the pitch. Shaw might then be able to find Mount (between the lines) or Sterling (1v1).

Because Maguire is deep,
USA can shuffle across b4 Shaw receives the ball. Image
This happened with most possessions.

Maguire passes to Stones (who is square to him). I understand he drops slightly but I don’t think he needs to drop this much.

A Stones pass to Maguire could enable HM to carry fwd or play quickly to Shaw.

Stones passes directly to Shaw. Image
If each possession is slowed down (as the ball is travelling backwards) this:

• Gives the USA slightly more time to shuffle across, closing the gaps in the FWD/Midfield lines.

• Means England’s possession move backwards by 4/5 yards (and the USA can push up).

Small details.
Once it becomes difficult to progress the ball additional players start to drop. And there needs to be space for the extra players to move into (unless they are comfortable in tight areas..) so the back line drops.

Maguire drops so he has more time & the Midfielders have space. ImageImage
The contrast between Stones’ positioning (who is playing on his dominant side & can turn out) & Maguire’s is evident during each build up.

Stones receives level or slightly ahead.

Maguire receives 3-5 yards deeper.

This loses England territory each time..

#Eng #FIFAWorldCup ImageImage
If positional play is correct it makes the oppo work harder.

Let’s explain.

Stones has the ball.

If Bellingham was the other side of Musah he would drag the USA Midfielder wider. This could open up space for the ball into Kane. Or it forces USA’s next Midfielder to shuffle Image
Across (to block that pass into Kane).

If England then work the ball out to the left (via Maguire, who is deeper again..) then both USA midfielders have greater distances to cover (moving to their right).

Over the course of a game these gaps become bigger & legs get heavier. Image
I was surprised England didn’t try this move more frequently.

If Shaw moves inside as the ball is being played to Maguire then McKennie (RM for USA in press) has a decision to make. He probably tracks Shaw.

This opens up the pass to Sterling.

But easier w/ left footed CB… Image
Spain are renowned for their positional play so I thought I would show their shape when in a similar position to England (both against a 4-4-2). Spain are in red in the top pic.

In both pics the right CB has the ball.

Look how deep Maguire is compared to Laporte.. Image
And look at the difference in spacing of the Spanish team in comparison to England.

Spain have:

•Deeper/narrower full backs.
•Wider Wingers
•Both 8s on the outside of Costa Rica’s CMs (England only have 1 because Saka is narrow..)

Spain make the pitch big & create space. Image
Here is one time England moved their full back (Trippier) inside.

Saka has maintained his width whilst the ball is on the opposite side of the pitch and it has created space for Bellingham to stay high (& run into) and for Tripper to move infield. Image
Pulisic stays central to prevent Stones from passing into Trippier.

This opens up the passing lane into Saka.

Bellingham can then attack the space between CB & LB.

This is a fairly easy way of progressing the ball… Image
Bellingham is now in behind & England are in the final third.

I’ve said before but the wide players affects the whole team. If they play narrow then the 8s drop deeper (to find space) which forces Rice deeper which forces the CBs deeper.

England run too much when in possession. ImageImage

I have really enjoyed watching #Esp during the #FIFAWorldCup Their spacing - during build ups - is fantastic as are their movement patterns. The players seem to be connected via string, all moving in unison.

I will try & highlight different moves they use to create space. Image
1) 1v1 isolation for Wide Player

Spain generally build down their LHS. If Laporte is under pressure Pedri will drop down. He can receive & play under pressure or create space for others..

Here he drops short but the ball goes to Alba. This means the LB has one less FWD option. Image
To help out, Asensio can:

• Drop to link the play
• Hold his position & show to feet
• Run in behind

He chooses to run in behind.

As he does this, Olmo drops to show to feet & Alba plays him the pass to the LW.

Pedri supports from deep. Image

I think it is important to remember that Managers plan for various scenarios before the game.

Knowing that Germany were going to press high, it made sense for Enrique to use Asensio as a CF who could drop - into midfield - to create overloads.

This enabled Spain to dominate…
Possession and build momentum going into the later part of the match.

Bringing on Morata (a player more dangerous in the box) then makes sense.

Starting Morata may not have worked and Spain then have little options to change the game.

Control + Goal threat is ideal but
It is probably easier to move from control to increased goal threat rather than the other way around.

Guardiola adopts a similar tactic when he plays Bernardo Silva wide or both Grealish & Mahrez (Foden/Alvarez coming on).

Historically, Spain seem to lack Elite Wingers/CFs..

Argentina were generally unsuccessful (marginally offside…) when trying to penetrate Saudi Arabia’s high DEF line. They might have been better playing Messi as a wide forward & having runners from Midfield.

Messi was often unable to receive, turn & play a through ball.
This would have been easier for him in a slightly wider area (and he could have stayed higher up the pitch). Moving Messi wide would also have freed up space for a runner from deep.
Imagine Messi & Di Maria changing positions in the below example. Messi could drive inside & play through balls.

Another option would have been to switch Gomez & Messi so that both could play first time balls around the corner (with their stronger foot)

My thoughts on #ChelseaFC

From the outside looking in, Chelsea have almost acted as two separate clubs over the last few years. Their identification & development of talented young players (even back to the KDB days) has been exceptional. But their first team recruitment Image
Has been disappointing.

The key for the new ownership group will be to unite the club, ensuring departments work together, providing clear development pathways & a consistent style of play.

I’ve said it before but I hope - as a club - they move away from a 3 CB formation.
I don’t think a club of Chelsea’s stature needs to field an additional CB and recruiting within this framework (plus Managerial changes) has led to a strange squad compilation.

From January onwards I would expect Chelsea to target a GK, a left footed CB, at least two Midfielders Image

There was some nice play in the build up to #England's opening goal but I thought I would highlight how one defensive decision (pressing) can impact the whole team. This is a nice example of that domino effect.

#ThreeLions #ENG #ENGIRA
Stones plays the ball across the pitch to Maguire. Iran's right sided Midfielder decides to press, detaching himself from the rest of his midfield.

This decision leads to England having a numerical advantage on their Left hand side & in the penalty area. Image
England momentarily have 3v2 on their left hand side and Maguire finds Mason Mount with a nice line breaking pass.

This overload forces Iran's defenders into a decision. Image

Another international tournament where the England team leaks hours before kick off. Not sure what the benefit of this information is tbh. Surely we can all wait a few extra hours & not give any advantage to the opposition…

Does this happen with every nation?
I’ve had a few say it makes no difference & maybe it doesn’t but the line up shows that England will play a back 4 & not a back 3. Against better opposition/Managers I believe that is a small advantage, even with only hours to prepare. It removes the ‘finding each other out’
Within the first 10/15 minutes. Which can be important. Some Managers announce their team just a few hours before kick off. The leak could (although unlikely) alter a team selection. One less CB for ENG means one less CB to mark at set pieces & a different build up structure etc.
