An @AP article explores the contested narrative around Hitler’s #Hakenkruz & the sacred #Swastika. Thanks @reporterdeepa for this nuanced look at an issue with deep impact on Buddhist, Hindu, Jain & Native American communities living in the west. 1/n

Thrilled to see CoHNA's efforts in driving education on Swastika in the story! Our recent California campaign re AB2282 resulted in a partial win & much work remains to be done. We thank the extended group working on the change-this is Dharma in action. 🙏🏽cohna.org/organization-l…
Powerful quote from Greta Elbogen, Holocaust survivor whose family was killed at Auschwitz, says it all..."This new knowledge about the swastika feels liberating”. She no longer fears a symbol that was used to terrorize, “time to let go of the past & look to the future.” 🙏🏾3/n
Article highlights oft ignored Native American perspective! Patricia Anne Davis, elder of Choctaw & Dineh nations says, “For Navajo people, the symbol, shaped like a swirl, represents the universe & life." Yet 4 tribes agreed to stop using it in 1940. newspapers.com/clip/36417593/… 4/n
Davis continues...“I understand the wounds & trauma that Jewish people experience when they see that symbol. All I can do is affirm its true meaning-the one that never changed across cultures, languages & history. It’s time to restore the authentic meaning of that symbol.” 5/n
A reminder, Hitler NEVER used the term #Swastika for his hateful symbol, always calling it #Hakenkeuz. Those who doubt this, can look at what contemporary reporting from the time said and what terms Nazis themselves used in their prolific propaganda. 6/n

Recently, a multi-faith coalition of Buddhist, Hindu & Native American spiritual leaders signed a historic proclamation affirming its meaning & asking the west to recognize the important distinction between #Swastika & #Hakenkreuz or the #hookedcross. 7/n understandingswastika.org/unveiling-swas…

#Hinduphobia. What’s wrong with this picture? The fact that a university department of @Columbia decides to use sacred Hindu imagery to advertise a politically charged and controversial conference filled with a list of Hinduphobic professors. 1/n Image
Could @Columbia have used a different picture? Sure, but, instead, the South Asia Institute deliberately targeted Hinduism, Shri Rama for their biased narrative. Academic Freedom not an excuse to target a religion without expecting a response. Let’s also review the speakers. 2/n
Rohit Chopra, Dheepa Sundaram, Thomas Blom Hansen - of last year’s Dismantling Global Hindutva conf which openly targeted Hinduism, singled out five Hindu last names as supporters of violence, called Hinduism a danger to democracy. cohna.org/wp-content/upl… 3/n

#AcademicHinduphobia
Racist white privileged professor attacks a brown NJ Hindu assembly member for calling out bigotry against his own community, and then plans to use that as “teaching material” in her classrooms. 🤨Notice…👇🏽1/n
1) …she has blocked two major Hindu orgs for not bending to her propaganda (left side)
2) she implies that somehow these orgs were responsible for “death threats” against scholars - a complete and blatant fabrication
3) she accuses NJ Democrats of being unethical 2/n
This is how unethical scholarship is used to advance hatred against and silence an entire minority community. Had this been bigotry against any other community, her own university would not have tolerated it. But, then again, this is how #AcademicHinduphobia manifests. 3/n

No, Prof Truschke, it is you & other Hinduphobes who spread hate & disinfo about Hinduism & Hindus while actively gaslighting the community. Your constant #Hinduphobia has been called out on several occasions. Some examples here (since you blocked us for no reason). 1/n Image
This infographic provides a snapshot of some of your most bigoted and racist views about Hinduism and Hindus. 2/n cohna.org/wp-content/upl…
The “Dismantling Global Hindutva” conference, which you supported along with the SASAC, singled out five Hindu last names (including that of Rep Mukherji) and deemed them as purveyors of violence. DGH also asserted that Hinduism must be dismantled. How is that “scholarship”? 3/n

Shree Umiya Dham Hindu Temple in Edison, NJ vandalized with “Free Palestine” graffiti. CoHNA strongly condemns this & stands with the temple in demanding that the perpetrators be brought to swift justice! Happened yesterday, when…1/n
…the Indian American community held a "March for Unity" event with several organizations participating. Unfortunately, in this peaceful event, bigots and racists like Pieter Friedrich intruded, trying to paint the community as extremist and intolerant. 2/n
But, why “Free Palestine” on a Hindu temple? #Hinduphobic narrative peddled by “academics” portrays Hindus as “colonizers” of Kashmir and draws false parallels with Palestine. The recent bulldozer controversy in Edison, NJ also provides fodder to push hatred against Hindus. 3/n
