It would be good and valuable for a certain segment of #USMNT twitter to get out of their bubble and get some outside perspective on what this team has accomplished & what they've become under Berhalter.
that lede from @Walid_4 captures so much of what I've been trying to say about this team, and so much of what a certain segment of sickos just doesn't want to hear or believe.
They'd rather be miserable I guess.
And here’s a take from a Canadian coach friend of mine who has zero rooting interest in the #USMNT
I don't think people have fully grasped what an inflection point this tournament is for Mexican soccer. They were a legit top 15 team for half a century, knocking on the door of the top 10. Infrastructure, culture, talent... they had it all & it seemed like a matter of time.
But this month's failure laid bare the bigger, structural failures in Mexico, and those bigger, structural failures have already been felt further down the ranks into the youth national teams. After decades of dominance at the U20 & U23 levels, that has started to dry up...
and the Mexican U17s aren't considered, collectively, to be as talented as the US & Canadian cohorts.
What's gone wrong? We tried to address it on Club & Country (can listen on the @Extratime podcast feed), and from where @empiregass and I sit, we see three main issues:
The goal sequence started with an unreal ball from Turner over the first level of the Iranian press, and an even better touch from Weah to bring it down and get it to Musah
As Iran were just retreating they didn't get any pressure to Adams or McKennie, and Dest was able to just book up the right touchline and get onto the end of McKennie's diagonal.
This goal is the epitome of everything Berhalter said he's been trying to build for the past four years. Expert distribution from the GK, to useful, precise & unhurried MF possession, to a flying fullback, to runners crashing the box vs. a defense disorganized by US possession.
My "Cifu's been great, but actually disproportionate amount of it comes from being part of elite team in a system that really caters to him" take is helped by the fact that he's been beaten out by Alan Franco -- who washed out of Charlotte in 10 games -- for the start today.
I can't decide if this means Liverpool's been let off the hook and a comeback is inevitable or if this means Liverpool's hanging on by their fingernails and it's only a matter of time until they get blown out.
Looks like it was the first one.
Napoli beating the brakes off 'em. I was supposed to be writing a #USMNT roster preview with @tombogert this afternoon but he's nowhere to be found. Gonna assume he's out playing in traffic.
