I don't think people have fully grasped what an inflection point this tournament is for Mexican soccer. They were a legit top 15 team for half a century, knocking on the door of the top 10. Infrastructure, culture, talent... they had it all & it seemed like a matter of time. But this month's failure laid bare the bigger, structural failures in Mexico, and those bigger, structural failures have already been felt further down the ranks into the youth national teams. After decades of dominance at the U20 & U23 levels, that has started to dry up...

It would be good and valuable for a certain segment of #USMNT twitter to get out of their bubble and get some outside perspective on what this team has accomplished & what they've become under Berhalter. Image that lede from @Walid_4 captures so much of what I've been trying to say about this team, and so much of what a certain segment of sickos just doesn't want to hear or believe.

They'd rather be miserable I guess.

The goal sequence started with an unreal ball from Turner over the first level of the Iranian press, and an even better touch from Weah to bring it down and get it to Musah As Iran were just retreating they didn't get any pressure to Adams or McKennie, and Dest was able to just book up the right touchline and get onto the end of McKennie's diagonal.

My "Cifu's been great, but actually disproportionate amount of it comes from being part of elite team in a system that really caters to him" take is helped by the fact that he's been beaten out by Alan Franco -- who washed out of Charlotte in 10 games -- for the start today. the above tweet is an act of violence against the @AnalysisEvolved nerds

Angulo's the one guy on Orlando who's looked up for it from the whistle. Did really well to bring the pressure and force that turnover. Also, Benji Michel changed the game.

I can't decide if this means Liverpool's been let off the hook and a comeback is inevitable or if this means Liverpool's hanging on by their fingernails and it's only a matter of time until they get blown out. Looks like it was the first one.

This is the best #USMNT XI I can make of guys who have played played professionally or internationally as both a right back (or right wingback) *and* the position I have them listed at.

Pretty good team! I really like Arriola as a pressing 10. - I couldn't remember McKennie ever playing RB or RWB, but if he has, then that spot is obviously his

- I only remember McKenzie played RB for the US U-20s, but that was good enough to make the list

- Remember when multiple coaches played Gyasi out wide? WTF man

I’m trying to understand the genesis of the protests vs. the Glazers:

- took on massive debt to purchase the club in the first place
- used team profits to pay off that debt (slowly) instead of reinvesting directly into the squad

(Cont’d) - used team profits to finance other, non-ManU projects
- have lost touch with the club’s roots & past (this one seems dubious to me)
- have failed to be forward-thinking with regard to sports science, analytics & managerial hires

(Cont’d)

Good effort by #FCCincy once they went down 2-0 early. Kept it respectable. Probably true, but losing 3-0 a week after losing 5-0 does technically show progress. Which is the best kind of progress to show.

RSL celebrated their win by having David Ochoa kick the game ball into the stands -- watch the big screen. (h/t @a2pugmom for the vid).

I'm screaming.
This is the greatest tradition in all of sports.

Tyler Adams has been a Jack of all trades for Leipzig, playing some as a pressing 8, a little as a true 6, a little as a RB and often (including today) as a wingback.

If this is his ceiling — utility man for a top 3 Bundesliga side — would you be stoked or disappointed? Would you rather see him move down a rung to a less ambitious team in order to get a job as a full-time 6?

Is there a TikTok hashtag I can follow to watch these vids for the next decade? I'm serious man, that video gave me life. I need more of them.

People forget how wild the 90s were: Ruby Ridge, OKC bombing, first WTC bombing, Waco, Atlanta Olympic bombing.

One folks forget is that RUDY GIULIANI led a riot of mostly white to try to undermine & overthrow David Dinkins, NYC’s first Black mayor. That’s on top of the invasion of Panama, the first Gulf War, the Balkan war and the fall of communism.

Everything I listed happened from age 13-19 for me.

I wonder what it would’ve been like with social media.

Jimmy Stewart really chewed the scenery in the last act here tbh. The theme of this movie is the only way to stop a bad guy with capitalism is a good guy with capitalism.

The 2021 U-20 World Cup got cancelled today, which is almost certainly the right move from FIFA.

But as a USYNT-obsessive a part of me is disappointed b/c the US is FREAKING STACKED among the 2001s, 02s & 03s.

Que sera sera. To put it into context: All previous US U-20 teams combined had one player (Jozy) who'd ever scored a goal in the MLS playoffs. This team could have 3.

Could also have a guy w/ a bunch of Copa Lib starts, attackers who've played for Arsenal & Barca, and Gio Freaking Reyna.

LAFC play the best soccer I've ever seen from an MLS team. 1998 DC, 2001 Fusion, 2010 RSL & 2018 Atlanta are the others in the discussion btw.

Armchair Analyst: Lots of folks are rightly going *in* on the #USMNT, Berhalter & the USSF as a whole.

On a more granular level I'm taking a look at what went wrong with this team last night – and what will keep going wrong until/unless it gets fixed
mlssoccer.com/post/2019/10/1… The number of times the US were out-manned 4-v-2 in central midfield last night was mind-boggling. It is the root of everything that's going wrong for the US right now, and – no matter who the coach is – it has to change.

I finished my #USMNT rewatch:

• Team selection is the core issue right now. Trapp, Zardes & maybe Boyd (still want to see more) aren't up to the level that's needed in these games
• Could see immediate improvement re: attacking combo play when Sargent replaced Gyasi • Zimmerman has been poor since Gold Cup. Not sure what happened b/c he was so good before that.
• None of the CBs was able to dip their shoulder and carry past the pressing Mexican front line. Didn't happen a single time all game long.

I understand @BrianSciaretta's take on this (the USYNT has capped these kids repeatedly at multiple age levels) as well as Belz's (in the new social media era we have to recruit every single dual national – take nothing for granted). They both make good points. But the overall point, as I see it: Shouldn't the #USMNT GM (or someone in the program) be checking in with our best players at all age groups on the regular as a matter of course? Shouldn't that be part of the job description?
