Reflections on #WorldAIDSDay2022

They were not good times @danielgoyal, the fear & prejudice these poor souls endured, even from healthcare workers, was huge. Media coverage of the epidemic was shocking & very judgmental. 1/9
My son was a toddler & my Mum was really concerned I could put him at risk, I can still remember telling her I was nursing them not sleeping with them!

At its worst I was working on a small purpose built Infectious Disease Unit situated away from other wards & departments. 2/9
We had six single rooms with an entrance area for gowning & masking up. The room had an independent air supply. These patients were shut away from everyone, this really didn’t help dispel the fear of the disease & made their last days very lonely ones indeed. 3/9
Young patients started arriving, mostly male, but I did nurse several females too. I can remember so many of their names & that’s not something I can say about other areas I have worked in. We got to know them & their loved ones so well, 4/9
they were absolutely terrified & needed so much psychological support, as well as physical care. Each admission showed further deterioration, they were becoming skeletal in front of our eyes. 5/9
I had so many difficult conversations with partners who couldn’t accept their loved ones were dying, they were far too young, in those days DNR’s were not routinely discussed. We become part of their circle, I became too close to too many of them & it took its effect on me. 6/9
I had never put so many young people in body bags or attended so many funerals. They were truly heartbreaking times &, until Covid, I thought I would never experience such horror & sadness again. 7/9
I’m so thankful I worked with such a fantastic bunch of nurses, we laughed, cried & ranted together & I remain in touch with many of them. I know now we were traumatised too.

The experience finally broke me & I left the hospital to work as a School Nurse for a few years. 8/9
My experience was not wasted there & I took part in educating teachers about the disease, helping, I hope, to dispel the myths.

I bounced back though & it made me the person I am today. I am proud to know I made a difference to so many. End/ #WorldAIDSDay2022
What I forgot to add is that have a red ribbon tattooed on the left cheek of my bottom. One of my patients dragged me into the tattoo parlour with him & we had them done together. I’ll carry them with me always. #WorldAIDSDay2022

Brilliant from @PecksniffsDiary, not my MP @tomhunt1988 is in Parliament for one person only, himself. Any MP who blocks constituents for asking questions or disagreeing with them are not fit for office. #Ipswich #TinyMajority #ToryTarget🎯 #ToriesOut145

“He hasn’t been seen knocking on doors since May. He takes a lot of photos, but has a reputation for not putting in the work. He takes up an issue, then loses interest. Fire-resistant cladding and special educational needs are two issues in point……. 2/
…..,where relations between him and campaigners have soured. As one of his opponents remarked: “He makes a song and dance about certain issues, but a lot of it is performative.”

There is also his failure to back the Ipswich bid for city status. 3/

I can’t believe this evidence was given to the Select Committee in June 2021 but has not been reported by the MSM. It is a long & difficult read but leaves me in no doubt at all that this government & its agencies have been negligent in their legal duty to protect HCW’s. 1/
I have been writing to my MP @tomhunt1988 since April 2020 stating my concerns about his governments handling of the pandemic, the inadequate protection against Covid for HCW’s & providing considerable supporting evidence. To date I have not received any explanation. 2/
David Osborn BSc, CMIOSH, SpDipEM Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner should be applauded for speaking out & all healthcare unions & professional organisations should be calling for further investigation into his very serious allegations. He states:

Johnson & his government don’t care about you, they didn’t even care that they were knowingly putting healthcare workers in danger. Please share this, it cannot be allowed to disappear. #JohnsonOut19

“Copies of the bundle of letters seen by Byline Times reveal how Osborn’s efforts to draw attention to the widespread systematic failure to protect healthcare workers fell on deaf ears across Boris Johnson’s government.” 2/

I have written to not #MyMP @tomHunt1988 on numerous occasions providing evidence that enhanced PPE protection was needed. They are all culpable in failing to protect those on the #Covid frontline & consequently the wider community. #JohnsonOut19 #CriminalNegligence 3/

Can I please ask all my followers to retweet this, it cannot & must not be allowed to get lost in everything else that’s going on. This government are culpable & I want to see justice for all lost healthcare workers. #WilfulNegligence #LambsToTheSlaughter #JohnsonOut16 1/4
“There is sufficient prima-facie evidence to suggest that the offence has led to the potentially avoidable deaths of hundreds of healthcare workers and the debilitating disease known as Long COVID in thousands of other healthcare workers,” the letter says.” 2/4

“An estimated 122,000 UK healthcare workers are now suffering from ‘Long Covid’, many of whom as a result are considering quitting their professions.” 3/4
