1. A Primer on "Facts vs. Reality"
Believe it or not, the vast majority of what appears in mainstream media (MSM) outlets is factually correct, if you know how to separate facts from opinion. But it rarely reflects reality. The distinction is critical and well worth learning.
2. First and foremost, let me tell you how to glean facts from what is reported in the MSM.
"Just discard all the adjectives and adverbs in a headline and the content of a story, what remains is mostly facts." Example:
Headline: "XXX Gave a Fiery Speech"
Fact: "XXX Gave a Speech"
3. Okay, so if MSM mostly presents facts, bathed in opinion, why can't we get a sense of what is really going on in the world by just homing in on the facts presented by the media, by discarding all the adjectives and adverbs?
4. Because MSM does not present all the facts, and even worse, MSM rarely presents the most relevant facts that have an important bearing on what's going on in the world.
5. For legal liability reasons, MSM makes sure it does not lie outright, but MSM has no legal obligation to present all the facts or even the relevant facts. It can pick and choose which facts to present, and leave out whatever doesn't comport with its narrative.
6. There is infinitely more happening in the world at any moment in time than what MSM can ever cover. So presenting selective slices of reality that suit MSM's narrative is the easiest thing in the world. There is always ample supply of data and facts to further any agenda.
7. To truly understand what's going on in the world, we need to know what the vast majority of people are actually doing, and not obsess over what a vocal minority is saying about what's happening. However, all we usually hear about is what a vocal minority in the media says.
8. So what are we to do? Here's a partial solution that ordinary folks, without access to extensive resources to run their own news gathering operations, can implement for their own use. It only requires analytical capabilities, logic, and patience. The rest is easy.
9. It's a 3-step process that everyone can and should practice:
a) Gather facts (i.e. MSM news stories minus adjectives and adverbs)
b) Make a logical prediction about imminent events based on those facts (quite often MSM itself will intimate such predictions)
c) Watch results
10. If the results do not comport with what you would reasonably expect, chances are there is nothing wrong with your logic, it is just that MSM never gave you all the facts, highlighted irrelevant facts, or likely exaggerated some relatively unimportant facts to push an agenda.
11. The important underlying principle to this bit of sleuthing comes from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle [creator of Sherlock Holmes], who illustrated it in a short story by solving a mystery based on "the dog that didn't bark" when you would would expect it to.
12. Let me close by illustrating with a past media story about thousands of 'armed terrorists' [as one prominent politician dubbed them] showing up in Michigan Capitol to protest Gov. Whitmer's stay-at-home order, thereby clearly implying the possibility of bloody violence.
13. Forget about bloody violence, was there any violence at all that day, or the day before, or the following day, or the day following that? Did you read any MSM stories about violence erupting in Michigan? Nope. So, what gives? The usual hyperventilation against #2A supporters!
14. Always look for "the dog that didn't bark" to understand what people are actually doing, even when MSM never tells you.
15. Political reality is often far removed from the reality on the ground. Unfortunately, MSM only cares about political reality and is always trying to manipulate it.
16. People's lives, OTOH, are far more impacted by the often unreported reality on the ground that you have to infer.

The End

1. A Primer On Critical Thinking

This is a rigorous thread on how to think for personal growth. This is the kind of stuff they should be teaching in schools and colleges. Critical thinking is unnatural and causes extreme discomfort at times, but it is necessary for growth.
2. Understanding involves thinking -- one of the most uncomfortable of human endeavors (not the most laborious or hard, but the most discomfiting). People go to great lengths to avoid thinking. Also, many people think they're thinking when they're merely rearranging their biases.
3. So why is "real thinking" so uncomfortable? To attempt an answer, I would have to first explain what I believe "real thinking" is. If you're game to hear it, stay with me.

1. Elon Musk Swings From Left To Right
Elon Musk's public musings over the past six months have cemented an unmistakable new reality that the world's richest man, and owner of the de facto public square, has become more and more Republican. And for very good reasons.
2. It's a stunning transformation for the Obama-, Clinton- and Biden-voting CEO of the most successful electric-vehicle company on Earth. Musk revealed last week that he would vote for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis if he runs for president in 2024.
3. The day before the midterms, Musk urged "independent-minded voters" to vote for Republicans, citing the need to "balance" a Democratic presidency.

1. Crypto Has No Value Proposition For 99.999% Of Humanity

What is Crypto's value proposition? Oh, it's anonymous and is not controlled by any central bank. That is it.

Now if you are not a drug lord or equivalent, that is not a value proposition. That is a living nightmare.
2. Crypto Uses A Fancy Newfangled Database Technology Called Blockchain

Do most people give a rat's ass about what kind of a database is used to keep track of their bank balance and financial transactions? 99.999% of humanity doesn't know one end of any database from another.
3. Crypto Is Anonymous

Most people, unless they are involved in organized crime of some sort, are proud to be known to their banks. Besides, anonymity works both ways. Who wants to park their money in a bank with no name, address, or phone number?

1. Mainstream Media's Real Problem With Twitter
It is not what you may be thinking. MSM is not afraid of losing its stranglehold on the narrative of the stories, or of alternative viewpoints, or of facts not to its liking. That is not really a big problem for MSM. You know why.
2. Because no matter what you think, MSM completely controls the narrative of any story it covers, and MSM usually can deal with all the known facts about any story. They specialize in force-fitting all known facts into their narrative, without losing control of the narrative.
3. MSM does not need to impose blanket censorship on categories of content or classes of people or ideologies to control the narrative. Nope. What it needs is the ability to exercise just-in-time censorship to control a particular thing -- the most insidious thing that it does.

1. Tax Code Justice
There is definitely plenty wrong with the U.S. Tax Code but it's not what you might think. But the politicians will never tell you what it is, because they have made careers out of playing on your emotions with class warfare rhetoric to get votes.
2. U.S. Tax Code is just about the fairest in the whole world.
📌Top 10% earners pay 70% of federal income tax
📌Next 40% pay 30% of tax
📌Bottom 50% pay almost no tax
If anything it is unfair to top earners. The problem with our tax code isn’t fairness. It is inefficiency.
3. Our tax code is a monstrosity in its complexity which is an enormous drain on the nation's human capital. The number of people involved in preparing and massaging tax filings in order to both comply with and to indulge in legal tax avoidance is a national disgrace.

1. On Appropriate Level Of Taxation

Read this thread at your own peril because you may never go back to your old way of thinking about taxes, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican. In other words, check your partisan views at the door, to get the most out of this thread.
2. Before I get into a serious 'scientific' treatment of the subject, allow me to dismiss some superficial reactions to the below chart.

I won't quibble with the details. Let's take the assertion about the U.S. being less heavily taxed at its face value.
3. U.S. is also the most advanced and the most prosperous nation. That is not unrelated to the fact that Americans refuse to let the government make sub-optimal and politicized re-allocation of their hard-earned money by forking over a majority of their income to the government.
