MCT Oil #supplementation improves cognitive performance in healthy young adults in a randomized, single blind, placebo controlled trial, published in 2020 and done in the UK.
Participants were divided into three groups and supplemented with placebo, 12 g, or 18 g MCT/day for 4 weeks in the form of gels.
Dosage was gradually increased by 6 g per week in the first 3 weeks.
Participants were tested once a week and after 2-3 weeks of supplementation, the MCT oil groups showed significantly improved performance in various cognitive tests compared to the placebo group.
The most effective dosage for MCT oil supplementation was found to be 18 g/day, with statistically significant differences between the 12 g and 18 g groups.
It might be working by supplying the brain with an additional energy source, as MCTs are easily absorbed by the body and converted into #ketones, which can be used as an alternative energy source for the brain.
The researchers used MCT oil with a modified C8:C10 fatty acid ratio of 30:70 mainly as a means to reduce gastrointestinal distress side effects.
Despite this, some minor side effects were experienced by 40% of the 12 g group and by 50% of the 18 g group.
These findings suggest that #MCToil supplementation could be an effective way to improve cognitive performance in healthy individuals.
Further research is needed to determine the optimal dosage and fatty acid ratio for MCT Oil supplementation. doi.org/10.1016/j.phys…
