#Belarus The sudden visit of the Russian MoD Sergei Shoigu caused another round of threads about Russia's immense pressure on Lukashenka who refuses to obey. I’ll be boring and stick to facts because there is little evidence of such pressure. Instead, we see an opposite trend ⬇️
First, Putin and Lukashenka hold regular & quite friendly meetings. They are very important for Lukashenka to show his elites that he has Putin’s support. Putin doesn’t seem to refuse a chance to meet.
Second, Russia supports Belarus financially & by providing various benefits.
Recently, the Russian Duma approved the bill law allowing Belarus to postpone debt payments for $1.4 billion. Russia also issued a new $1.74 billion loan. Belarus has access to the Russian market, infrastructure and especially ports, which is crucial because of Western sanctions.
We don’t know yet the content of the protocol amending the regional security agreement. For Lukashenka, signing documents never meant any serious commitment: look at the Union Treaty. The use of Belarusian territory happened without any - even sudden and fast - signing of papers.
Of course, as was said, it could mean further military collaboration. But let's remember that Russian troops have been stationed in #Belarus for almost a year. The regime is helping Russia with tanks, ammunition & military vehicles, yet the Kremlin needs more and more equipment.
What are the signs of Lukashenka's disobedience? The Russian army used infrastructure, railways & airfields. The regime provided quartering, medical assistance, navigation support, fuel to the Russian army. Now we know about the training that the regime’s army offers to Russians.
I remember Makei's pro-Russia speech at #UNGA in September. The regime supports the Kremlin in every international organisation. Propaganda in #Belarus copycats and mirrors the Russian one. People in my country are served the same fakes about Ukraine as Russians. Disobedience?
Don't get me wrong: I don't see any logic and limits for Putin. When he threatens the world with nuclear weapons, who cares about Lukashenka. However, let's rely on reports: now we don't see Russia gathering a large amount of combat-ready troops in Belarus to attack #Ukraine.
It's true that constant drills and data verification of men in Belarus raise concerns. The MoD prepares amendments to the law on mobilization in Belarus. It's not clear what for.
What is clear is that Putin won't abandon plans to attack Kyiv. The easiest way is through Belarus.

#Belarus When I read comments that Belarusians gave up and are doing nothing, I want to share the facts and data. In November alone, at least 354 people were arrested for political reasons. It gives us 11 people every day arrested for their opposition to the regime and the war
These figures come from @viasna96 human rights defenders. Just a reminder: their director Ales Bialatski is in jail.
The regime's list of "extremists" now includes 2117 people. Among them are journalists, bloggers, priests, pensioners and many others. Every month, it grows.
Political prisoner and brilliant lawyer Maksim Znak was sent to a cell-type facility, which is another form of pressure and isolation. Before that, he was sent to punishment cells at least 3 times. Maria Kalesnikava recently ended up in an intensive care after a punishment cell.
I am rubbing my eyes at the number of conspiracy theories caused by FM Uladzimir Makei’s death. Of course, any sudden death, especially of an important official in a dictatorship provokes interest. The independent outlet @nashaniva wrote about heart attack, citing its own sources
In this particular case, I'd believe they indeed have their own sources. Though we can't exclude anything, for now, no other evidence exists.
I wanted to share other points that I’ve read since yesterday. First, about his alleged pro-Western views. It was the result of balancing
between Russia and the West. His influence between 2015 and 2019 was naturally higher. There was even some progress. But back then, Makei was not acting against Lukashenka - the latter was balancing himself. In 2020, the "multi-vector" politics vanished. So the question is:
🔹Vital Melnik is a railway partisan who was shot in his knees. Now he has been charged with terrorism, insulting Lukashenka, and illegal acquisition of weapons. The case was referred to the court. Terrorism in #Belarus can mean the death penalty
🔹Right now, three men are on trial in the Homiel court, accused of terrorism, treason, participation in an extremist formation. The reason for the arrest was a relay cabinet on the railway set on fire. The Investigative Committee officially stated that they can face death penalty
🔹Siarhei Kanavalau was a railway employee, arrested and accused of an "act of terrorism".The regime stated that he PLANNED to destroy the system that ensures the movement of the railway. He was sentenced to 15 years.
Yesterday's @UN Security Council meeting on the forced landing of the @Ryanair flight by the regime in Belarus is something we have asked for since May 2021. It's a violation of the basic rules of civil aviation and can encourage other dictators to hijack planes to jail opponents
I was glad to see a strong response from the international community. @icao clearly stated:
✔️The regime lied about a bomb threat
✔️It deliberately endangered the safety and lives of those on board
✔️The Chicago Convention was violated
Lukashenka is behind it & must be punished
Apart from Western democracies, it was important to hear the voices of India, Gabon, Ghana, Brazil, Kenya, Mexico, and the UAE. The safety of civil aviation unites more countries than one might expect. Crucially, many countries mentioned violations of human rights in #Belarus
I support #Ukraine wholeheartedly. But it makes me frustrated when I hear that Belarusians don’t resist & protest. This is the most brutal regime Europe witnessed in decades. It's cynical to tell people to go protest and oust the dictator just like that. Let's stick to the facts:
There are now 1342 political prisoners. At least 40,000 were detained since 2020. Hundreds, to say the least, were tortured. Some were killed. Despite that,on Feb 27, tens of thousands of Belarusians protested across the country to support Ukraine. 1000 detained on that day alone
- Railway partisans who stopped the movement of Russian troops now face the death penalty in Belarus (did any Ukrainian official raise their issue?)
- Ukrainians mentioned how Belaruski Hajun was helpful. FYI: many people were jailed for sharing information about missile strikes
I was denazified until the age of 14 when I started to speak Belarusian every day for the first time. My family is from Ukraine, so naturally, this is not their mother tongue. My Belarusian friends never used it. I never heard it in kindergarten. My first teacher barely knew it
My high school - the prominent Yakub Kolas Lyceum - was different. This is where I learned Belarusian and completely switched to it.The regime didn't like the school & closed it. We studied underground. Outside my school, people looked shocked whenever I spoke Belarusian in Minsk
Lukashenka made Belarusian the language of the "opposition". His officials almost never use it. At universities, there are only a few lecturers who can speak it. There are only a few schools in Belarusian. "Are you from a village?" one would hear if they use Belarusian publicly
