Fun astronaut facts for #mespine, #mecfs and #eds peeps:
1) When astronauts go into space, they gain 2 inches height because their SPINES expand in microgravity. adventhealth.com/practices/adve….
2) Herpes reactivation is extremely common in astronauts. Herpes titres INCREASE the more time spent in space/on the space station. However, CD4+, CD8+, T-cells and NK cells all drop. hhv-6foundation.org/latest-scienti…
3) Astronauts on the ISS suffer from inordinately from RASHES and HYPERSENSITIVITIES. They are the MOST COMMON health problem. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
4) Upon coming back to earth, astronauts must contend with orthostatic issues. They suffer from a "Pots-like physiology" : reuters.com/article/us-hea…
5) Astronaut Scott Kelly, who has spent the longest amount of time in space of any American, reacted with HIVES to everything he touched upon first return to earth. smh.com.au/lifestyle/astr…
6) Scott Kelly experienced significant cognitive impairment for at least 6 months after his return to earth. They stopped testing after 6 months. penntoday.upenn.edu/news/how-year-…
And there you have it! Food for thought and wonder about astronauts. (And, of course, the involvement of mechanical spinal stretch in herpes reactivation, decrease in immunological titers, Mast Cell Activation, and cognitive impairment.)
Footnote: Low-morning cortisol was noted in astronauts as well (see link above regarding herpes reactivation).
Second footnote: After tethered cord release and spinal fusion, the MCAS symptoms of @jenbrea and @jeff_says_that decreased dramatically.

Unpopular opinion: if more than a handful of doctors knew the full gamut of the downstream effects of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Long Covid and ME/CFS might not be such a mystery. If your connective tissue is loosened, you are at risk for:
Small Fiber Neuropathy. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Gastroparesis. IIH without papilledema. Mast Cell Activation. Autoimmune Disorders. Cerebral Spinal Fluid Leaks. Cervical instability causing neurological issues such as word-finding & brain-fog as well as Occipital Neuralgia.
A tightened filum, causing bowel/ bladder issues, leg pain/ weakness and inability to walk. Obstetrical and gyn problems. Scoliosis. Slipping Rib Syndrome. Migraines. Tinnitus due to compression at the CCJ. Obstructive Apnea. Central Apnea caused by phrenetic nerve compression.

This informal poll about a heavy-head feeling in Long Covid is now finished. Lines up with @jencurtinmd 's poll last January. Thanks @Gronnet for doing it!
The attached two slides are from a webinar given by Pradeep Chopra, an Ehlers-Danlos expert, about Ehlers-Danlos. The quote "My head feels too heavy to hold up" takes up an entire slide! Image

If Covid does deplete connective tissue, then #longhaulers should start looking a lot like patients with the connective tissue disorder Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). One of the problems of EDS can be issues in the brain and spine that sometimes require neurosurgery. A thread:
In the book "Disjointed" -- a recent textbook comprised of essays regarding Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome -- Brown University neurosurgeon Petra Klinge has a chapter entitled "Neurosurgical Considerations."
In it, she reviews the possible neurosurgical problems of EDS patients: Craniocervical Instability and Atlantoaxial Instability, Chiari Malformation, Tethered Cord Syndrome, Spontaneous Intercranial Hypotension, and IIH.
